It depends on what lure you are using and where you are fishing it......
This is what i have found to work best:
Jig Head: no6, 1/8 ounce
Lures: Berkley Sand worms, Pearl white shad, Watermelon 3 inch Shad with power scales(Best all round lure for any fish in any weather)
The Berklry Gulp Sand worms:- With a piece of the worm(about 4cm).....cast it out and let it settle and let it just sit there for a couple of seconds and then retrieve it very very slowly......usually the fish will take very near to you.
The minnows - in a bay or near rocks:- cast it out and let it settle for a few seconds so that it goes to a little deeper water, then retrieve slowly, just fast enough to keep it off the rocks, a tip is to just give the lure a slight jerk now and again to get the attention of any fish lurking in between the rocks.
The monniws - on the surf:- stand a little in the breakers and cast your drop shot at an almost 45 degree angle from you just behind a wave as it breaks and reel with a little speed so that the lure is at a medium depth in the wave.....you will eventually be reeling the lure parallel to the breaking wave. This way you will get a knock from a 3 spot pompano on almost every cast, if they are there!
The above methods are some of the retrieves that i use and it has worked very well for me............
Moat of the time you will actually see the fish follow the lure and strike it just before you lift it out of the water.

. Live in Gauteng and will probably only see the sea again in a few months. Will try it when I go to Mozambique again, normally get their about 4 times a year.
