Thanks kaptein! Jaha the setup I used that day was a 10ft daiwa meagaforce rod with a daiwa regal and 20lb gator braid

Had a great day found some new spots saw 2 giant leerie but missed managed a few undersized elf all in all not a bad day out at kini but I need to do lots of research and think I need a lighter setup the 12ft vengences 2 heavy for the job what weight lures do you guys mostly throw

Hi guys, so everybody says "go Sustain" so I went out and bought a 5000FG to mate to my 10ft6 Sensation Dominator.  After speaking to the owner at the tackle shop, he informed me that although the Dominator states that it is rated for 4oz lures, he has had 4/5 comebacks of broken rods.

I was only plannning on throwing up to 2.5oz anyway, but the idea stuck in the back of my head.  So I went out and bought a 10ft6 Daiwa Exceller as a back-up rod, but now the Dominator is the back-up.

Great rod and great reel, but:

The Sustain can only take just more than 200m's 20lb braid - should I be worried that that is enough for the surf?  I went for a few casts and coming from a 4000 CrossFire there is no comparison, so I am very very happy with the reel.

The "ogies" on the Exceller is much smaller than that of the Dominator.

So I shortened my leader and now the braid is cutting into my finger.  I've seen some guys fishing with a glove.  Is that a viable option?

Please bear in mind that I am an extreme newbie when it comes to Surf Spinning.

I am also learning the spinning part of rock and surf but been using braid on grinders a long time I got tough hand s so never needed a glove my last ex she always used gloves think it's a personal choice as for the setup sounds perfect now you need to get some fish with it

Hi guys. Just bought a new 9' and I am braided up and ready to try and catch a cobbie or 2.

The only problem is that I have no idea how :lol:1

Hi mate. Just a starter set. The current reel is a Daiwa 2500 with 20lb braid on. This will change once budget allows.

Rod is a Dave Alcock Signature 9ft.

My first leerie on bucktail, successfuly released this 58cm wave master!!
Pic not best quality on a cell phone, with adrenalin rushing, and eagerly wanting to get it back in the water (on my own).
This picture is not worth the 1000 thoughts that went through my mind whilst landing the best fish to catch on light tackle IMO (although I'm not a seasoned lure angler at all)

Thanks all, gonna try for some more the weekend. Missed a nice size cob the weekend before leerie, in very rough seas and very dirty water, also on bucktail. It strarted spooling me and I got too eager to land it, and tightened the drag 1 too many, and lost it. Felt like cob, 'plastic bag' with plenty of head butting in between, but then again this newby could be wrong!
Getting more confidence in bucktail now, with a catch and a miss on it. And it casts a mile, even on windy days, and rough seas, what is needed mostly at the Wildside!!

That is quite some interesting statement, about the wild side.
Tell me more about what winds make the water dirty.

I very seldom go that side because of that I dont know the effect of the winds.
The general trend is couple days east and when it turns west.
I can only imagine that the east turns the water off color and the west kill the side wash?

I know a couple of hard wests makes the surf big and the side wash impossible!

Hi Splasher, I was not referring to conditions needed at the Wildside, but that I need the distance which bucktails give, when the Wildside shows itself. Yes the Wildside does live up to expectations when westerly blows for few days!
