Like Vades said here,the Shimano Sustain 5000 is a Spinning machine ! I paid R2200

for mine about 2 months ago. The Shimano Stradic 5000 goes for about R1700.

A  friend of mine paired the Shimano Saragosa 5000 with his Assassin Amia (11ft) and

its very well balanced. He paid R1400 for the reel. I have the Shimano Saragosa 6000

on my heavier Spinning setup and can say thats a BULL of a reel !

cool jah. vades thanks, the thing about buy through the post is that I want to see and feel the reel first and maybe even fit it onto the rod before committing. especially when its a reel of 2k.
I suppose its better to buy quality the first time rather than end up buying 2 reels.
carll, I think 5000 is defintily the way to go, because like l say the 6000 is a bit overpowering. I will go have a look this weekend, Go shop around a little.
how about reels like the daiwa Seagate or penn conflict or torque, im not sure about the prices on them.
it doesnt seem like they are very popular since one doesnt often hear of guys using them?

I would personally go for a Shimano. I had a Daiwa Seagate and had it replaced 3 times. It started sticking/seizing after long spinning sessions. Eventually replaced it with my Shimano Stradic and have never looked back.

Can't comment on the Penn reels as I've never used them before.

Vades i have also had the same problems with my Daiwa Seagate. i have replaced it with a Shimano Sustain 5000 and will never fish with another reel other than a Shimano Stradic/Sustain ever again!

Vades i have also had the same problems with my Daiwa Seagate. i have replaced it with a Shimano Sustain 5000 and will never fish with another reel other than a Shimano Stradic/Sustain ever again!

My Shimmy gets dunked in salt water every week and continues to operate flawlessly.

thanks for the input okes. I was thinking about going with a Penn of
some sorts, since im quite happy with the sargus even though its Not a top top of the range it is good and solid for tje price you pay.
but now after speaking to the pro's, I think ill rather take yoir advice and get something worthwhile.

so the specifications on the side of the box is qute extensice.
does anyone know that "X-ship" is or refers to?
some of the okes said that it makes the reel better than the older mods so presume its a recent upgrade.

So still looking to catch my first cob on lure from the surf I decide to go fish vanstadens the weekend. I pop in at alcocks on thursday lunch time to pick up some paddle tails to give a go over the weekend. I arrive there saterday morning and take about a 5km walk down towards gamtoos side. Find a nice hole put on my newly acquired 5 inch orca paddle tail and as luck would have it first cast and after just a few turns of the reel VAS.!! I fight the fish for a few minutes and the end result my first cob on lure from the surf. Fish measured 101cm and also a PB cob on lure. I could not manage another fish over the weekend but was very happy with my cob. Fish was safely released to fight again another day. Thanks for all the advice of my fellow sealiners that helped me to gain sufficient knowledge to catch my first cob from the surf

Rite so after quite a bit of thought and shopping around, going from one tackle shop to the other, I finally decided on the shimano sustain 6000FG.

Initially I wanted a 5000 size reel for my exceler elite 11' 6'' since the penn sargus I own is a bit heavy and bulky for the rod, but after having a proper look ate the sustain 6000 and after comparing it to the sargus 6000 my mind changed once again.

The sustain is about 100g lighter than the sargus and has a slightly smaller profile. When holding the reels in hand it is not much, but after placing them of the rod the difference is clear.

I now still need to fill her up. I was thinking in the line of 20lb gator braid of power pro, or perhaps 15lb fire line. Thin braid topped of with 5m of 50lb braid leader and 1-1.5m of 0.5.-0.7mm fluoro.

This is definitely an upsized setup (from my 8ft vengeance and exceler 3000) but hopefully it will give me that extra distance I need to get that extra arm stretches this summer!

[glow=red]By The Way:[/glow] What do you okes think of braid leaders? It should spare the thinner braid when casting (if using a short mono leader) and reduce friction through the guides when casting ( if using a long leader).

Fantastic fish, how about helping the nocices out, how do you retrive with surf running? Bottom running paddle tails, what weight. Do you use spoons. I live in cannon rocks the surf is fierce. Looks like your areas are awesome. Regards, Mongvis
