Hi

Does anyone know how to catch these fresh water eels? Baits, tackle, locations, dams, etc... Does on target structure, inlets, deep pools, ect....

I know Hazelmere holds the record for the mottled eel.

Any information is more than I have at the moment, so go ahead and give your 2c, or more...lol

We normally look for them in deeper pools in the rivers, put out a nice fishead on a proper trace. And take out the block & tackle...

inanda dam is full of them, catch them on flying ants... i saw a eal that a woman caught in klaseriedam, she had it over the shoulder, at the front the head was on the ground and at the back the tail was on the ground... jug

we catch them when bottom fishing here in the bay. when your fishing off a ski and that product of the underworld wriggles up your trace and half onto your lap, lets just say i dont fancy it

I got a few before in the saltwater while targeting rock cod. They love to tangle up in the line. The one I caught on a double hook trace managed to get the second hook firmly in his tail... I can tell you, trying to untangle a wriggling eel with two hook in it while it's between your legs on a choppy sea is no fun... Lol especially when the eel's pissed off... Makes for a good story though.

The farmers in the Matatiele area catch them in the river up there they say they taste better than crayfish. I find that hard to believe, but anyway good luck.

There used to be a guy at Hazelmere regularly targetting them. He would sit on the cliff face to the right of the wall, 40lb main line, wire trace, 3oz sinker and a long shanked 4/0. His bait was carp fillet, the bloodier the better. He only ever fished in the evening and reckoned that they lived in the caves in the cliff face near the bottom. He was there most Friday evenings and often caught some quite large specimens.
I think parts of Inanda may also produce if you put in the time.

Here is a story for everybody planning to catch a big eel from a boat!!!!! Very funny and I think I ld have needed about 24 Balck labels before I tried to get this one of the boat!

As a kid I used to catch them in the Klaserie river when it came down in flood (which didn't happen to often).  I used the big dungworms with the hook threaded into it.  And yes, they really do make for good eating - our maid used to prepare them for me.

"OK. I know they not fish which is why I put this under General..." they are fish.

 We get them in the Cape rivers as well, they like the deep pools and best bait as far as I know is some chicken livers.

That story was a classic! But the weight and lenght are very suspect. There are very few people who can hold 100pds with straight arms in front of them and as for a 6ft long eel to weight that much......... Alcohol and fishing have alot to answer for!

Al eels in our rivers and dams originated from the sea. Due to the many damwalls eels became more and more scare in inland waters. Catch and release is a good idea.

that story seems a bit fishy to me... i've never heard of any creature attacking people when it has an opportunity to escape... seems like too much beer can shange a story... none the less, a nice specimen...
