At the side of your spool you will see a little round silver "button" (on shimano reels) where you can put your line throuhg. Now before you do that, you walk out say a 100m of line off the spool, before reeling it back in, twist your line around the silver "button" and reel all the line back in. So as you cast, the line will come off the spool up until 100m's, and then it wont go any further as it hits the clip. So the line cannot go more than 100m's off the spool. Therefor you are casting every cast at 100m, creating an accurate feeding spot.

Just keep in mind that when you fish on the clip, you have to hold your rod a little to the back after you have casted. this will help not to cast the line off. As the line runs out and hit the clip, your rod will then go forward towards the water and this helps for not casting the line off at the clip. This also helps with casting on the same spot.

Thanks for filling in on the technical detail guys.. i thought the illustration on that article explained the concept really well...
i used clipping at heartsease this weekend i thought the wish will be around 80 in the water we sat so i preclipped spools at 80.... .. however .. i forgot that i clipped a spool at 80m and loaded it with a p4 and big ball... ready to hit .. around 140 ..
.. you can imagine waht happned next..

Yes it cn get triicky .. most o the time you geet fish that onlyrun a few meters .. that is why you must always be close to your rod;. Clpping is very handy .. yesterday i was fishing new waters .. and lippped both at about 80m ... i started feeding the spot and after a while started picking up fish ... so you might have to run into the waater and unlip your lin ater a take but the payoff is great.
