Howzit AJ. Out of all the spinning reels I have, the best value for money is the Saragosa. I have a 4000 and have no doubt that it would do the job. The Saragosa's are a little heavier than the Stradic, Sustain and Stella and retail for a similar price to the Sustain. It is a better reel than the Sustain though - the Sustain 8000 I have gets water in the drag, the Saragosa not. The big weight jump in the Saragosa is between the 4000 & 5000 - from 12.5 to 20.6 ounce and the others from the 5000 to the 6000 - 13.9 to 20.8 ounce. The 6000 & 8000's have the same physical dimensions but the 8000 has more line capacity.

I can pick the 8000 up for you in Singapore for about S$350 and the 4000 for about 300.

Dingleberry,

Thanks boet, when are you going the Singapore way again? The only drawback about the Saragosa is no spare spool, I have the 4000 Stradic's and like them lots!

Still my questions is will the 6000 or 8000 Shimano's fit on the Berkley Air?

Ps: Nick is opening a Shop in Dubai and has the Shimano Agency now!

are you going to fish this? http://www.fujairahclassic.com/main/

Cheers

Yes they will !

I use either my Daiwa Oceano 4500 or my Shimano Stradic 8000 on my XH Berkley Air.

Note : 6000 and 8000 Stradic is the same reel, just the depth of the spool differs...

Just kidding, If you can get the Stella, it is one of the three best reels ever made(Van Staal, Daiwa Saltiga Z and Stella) All good, if you've got $$$

Where do one get the Abu Garcia reels ? Don't see them in the shops in Cape Town and don't see any of the online retailers selling them

I would also appreciate more info on where to get one of these reels in the Durban surrounds. There is one Soron 40 at Basil manning, but I am looking for the Soron 60 for my Berkley Air. Cannot find one in any of the shops I know of in Durbs, or on any of the Internet retailers sites.

I am also wondering if anybody have used both a soron and a exceler plus and is willing to give a comparison between the two. I am still a bit in two minds between the two, and the prices seems to be fairly similar (Soron slightly more expensive)

I own both the Exceller plus 3000 and the Soron 60, but haven't used the Abu yet, only got it last week.

It does come with 2 spools, I loaded the one spool with 12lb Stren Braid (also a casting braid). Spare spool will be loaded with 30lb braid.

Quality, well the Soron looks good and well built. But I still want to open mine and have a look on the inside

BTW. I bought the Soron 60 for my Berkley Air 9ft XH, a very good and well balanced combo.

Personally, at this stage, I think another Stradic would have been a better purchase.

Hi Neil

Thanks for the reply!!!! I am looking at options for my own Berkley Air 9ft XH. What size stradic would you reckon to be the best fit for the Air? Would you recommend the Stradic above both the daiwa and abu?

Personally,
yes I would recommend the Stradic, it just feels much better, and I know for a fact it's a very good reel !

Depends what you want to target, anything from a 4000 to a 8000 Stradic would do.

I think with the 4000 and 5000 the balance would be a bit better, with the 6000 and 8000 the reel feels A LITTLE BIT too big for it, but only a little bit.

What about the little Daiwa Crossfire 4000, that's what I've got, works like a champion! Your take Neil?

JBay,  started out with the crossfire, but it soon ended in a misfire im the surf. Nice little reel for freshwater in my oppinion, but mine only lasted 4 or 5 trips in the surf before it packed up on me.

Don't really know them, so can't comment, it's one of the FEW reels I don't have ::S

Hmmmm, I'll have to watch out for that, looks like he might need some extra tackle protector after each trip!

Open, clean, grease, lube after every trip.

That's what I do with ALL my reels after they went with fishing !
Quite a pain when you take 4 reels with you, but you know what, I can't remember when last I experienced problems with a reel while fishing.

Keep in mind they fall in the sand, get washed in saltwater and so forth ...

Hey Fly Guy,

both the 8000 and 6000 Shimano fit on the Berkley Air. Brilliant reels and tough as nails with fantastic drag!! definitely my recommended reel!!

for what its worth i've got excellers 2000+2500 and replaced the bearings on one of the 2000 3 times and the 2500 7 times, i also open and clean after every trip and try to keep them as far away from the water as possible, i have since graduated to sustains and can quite safely say that they are far superior, granted the excellers have done a bit more hard graft but by this stage in their lives the excellers had already had 1 and 3 sets of bearings respectively
