Could your casting difference (ie 170m upcountry and 130m at coast) not got to do with high altitude vs sea level .... I play WP golf and there is about 10% difference to ball flight when playing in JHB (ie flies 10% further upcountry) ....
I think that might have some effect on it. Also, at the lake I practice, I usually don't have too much cross winds. I could understand if it was with a bait on as I don't practice with a bait.

Also when at sea,you have the added, uneven friction of the bait attached to your trace which reduces your casting distance

Yup.
Not sure what its called, comes in a blue box, around R100.

Works great, and is also used when spooling line, so you know exactly how much you have on, especially when you want to split a 600m spool in 3 !
Homie, that line counter in the pic's reading is 190m.......was that your last cast at Leeukop:fbash

Air density at the coast way thicker, lots of turbulence over the surf and invariably winds at the coast which are not found as much on lakes.

Also 3 days of hard fishing and wading and the grease/oil in the bearings has some salt added to it making it thicker and tackier, causing friction and loss in distance.

Here is another thing I thought about while I was at the coast now. The level of the water is higher than any lake you will practice at because of the wave action.

At a dam, the water level is at or below your feet. At the ocean, this is not the case as the waves could be 2 meters high.

Would you agree with this or am I smoking my socks?

I use one of those depth meters that you can buy at any tackle store. What I do is, I cast my sinker out into the lake, roll up any slack line. Reset the meter, reel in. This lets me know what real distance I got.

If you measure the bow your line created on a windy day. You will add a extra 50m to your cast so this doesn't really give you an accurate reading unless you wind out the slack before measuring.

I average 170m with a 8oz on my WAFT shark with 0.55 line.

I can however tell you that when I get to the coast, still only casting a 8oz, I doubt that I get to 130m. I don't know why this is though.
The reason is the air density, along the coast the air is denser and provides a thicker medium for the sinker to travel, its for the same reason that one hits a golf ball so far in pretoria .our aircraft on the other hand performs better along the coast ,there's more oxygen lol and handles a lot better.wind also influences the rate at which the lead travels through the air

Yup, with a 12 ounce and a 12 ounce simulated Yellowtail head.
So you were casting 24oz ... ? :fbash

Here at the coast we don't simulate ANYTHING, we attach a sinker, we cast out MAX 100m, we slide A REAL BAIT and then we catch A REAL FISH ...

BTW all you long distance casters, I catch most of my fish within 75m of the spot I'm standing, stop casting OVER the fish ...

julle Transvalers ...

I concur stop throwing over the fish, there's a guy who never wades and catches big fish at macs all the time ,yes you've guessed Xerxes that's the man
