Hi All,

I will be in Mossel Bay between 03 March and 11 March.

How has the fishing been in and around Mossel Bay the past few weeks ?

What has been comming out ?

On my last trip i went to Dana Bay 3rd Strand but no luck.

Any comments will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dale

the water temp in Mossel bay at the moment is about 22 to 23 degrees, I haven’t fished there for quite a while, but would think if you could get a live bait out at Hartenbos river mouth or near the pipe at Bayview or Diaz beach your chances for a Garick are not too bad, (provided the water is clear and calm) at the saltic first second and third prize was taken by garick the largest being over 14kg. All these fish are caught a stone’s throw from the shore
Other than that, I heard that the okes were klapping the big blou-elf at gouritz.

Fish light tackle there Or you'll never Make it home when the Sea gets big , and you've got something Big on . The water there is south - and on the bricks - that just means trouble , as all you'll be getting straight off the bricks is sheer force coming at you from the open Sea .

If you fish under the lighthouse as an example , you have to fish 25-30feet up , just in case the water gets rough .

to the left of the Cave , right in front of Tidals , is a spot marked by a big block . It gets shelter from the bricks in front of it , Which break the force of the water , but when it gets big there you 'll be clinging to that rockface and wondering why the hell you didn't just go put out a livie off boggoms etc ...

for galjoen you want white working water, and don't think you need a long cast to get into the target zone, often 40 to 50m is more than far enough.
I prefer pink prawn since often when targeting galjoen( especially at Dana Bay) you could also pick up small cob, and on the rocks left of Hartenbos river mouth when targeting gallies, bream and baardman at low tide, i have gotten quite a few nice shad on prawn as well.

i agree with def tho if you are on a gallie mission, gourits is the place to be

Thanks for the feedback Gustav and Def !

I would like to try Gouritz between 3rd and 10th so if you guys are keen let me know. I guess not everyone's on holiday but let me know.

Dont realy know Gouritz area, only fished in the river a few times.

Also want to try Beneke se Klip for a Silver. Got a swimming crab in the freezer that i'm going to bring with for the big rod and scratch with the smaller rod.

Where exactly is Beneke se Klip ?

Coordinates for Beneke se klip parking area according to google maps are -34.139035, 22.111992
But geting hold of fresh sand crab isn’t difficult, you can get them at almost any sandy beach in Mossel bay.
I doubt there are many mussle cracker around at the moment, (usually from September to mid January )
One of the old timers in Hartenbos swears by sand crab for white steenbras, he catches them lave at low tide and fishes the incoming tide. I can’t even tell you how many fish he has caught on those, but you’ll see his pictures in most tackle shops holding up 7kg+ steenies.
He uses smaller sand crab with the carapace not much larger then a R5 coin. And almost exclusively fishes the stretch between Beneke se klip and and the pipe/ jetty about 1km to the right.

Thank for the info Gustav,

Is hartenbos still good to pump prawns ?

There was a little blind river to the right of Dana bays 3rd stand, never tried pumping there , do you know if there is prawn there ?

Hartenbos mouth is closed at the moment, and you are going to struggle even with a prawn net.
Not sure about the river at Dana bay, i would rater go have a try on the sand banks in the mouth of the great brak river, provided they are open/ shallow enough

I haven't been to Mossel bay in just over a month, so its hard for me to give you any recent updates of what is currently happening...
I think best would be to visit a local tackle shop, (try the one in Langeberg Mall) the owner is also a dedicated fisherman, and he will get you up to date with whats biting at the moment.
