Hi all,

I want to go try my luck at the Vaal River (near Orkney) the weekend of 25/09.  Any idea what is worth targeting and or what is taking bait.  What about bass and what bait is working.  Thanks

its downstream from the gold mines... you might want to try some cyanide...

LOL

not sure bout the bait but in the river you need a different trace depending on the bottom conditions.. river is not flowing too much these days ( i cross the river daily) wich is good.. so just make sure you dont use too light weight in the current... the reast is up to you ... i recon dough works best .. with one kernel on the tip...

I’ve fished that area a few times over the past year or so, we were catching on floaties with a dough backing, plain mielie with a dough baking also worked, used banana, strawberry and almond dips

Thanks Joff.  I have my dough mixture and plain soft floaties ready and will get the flavours you suggested.  My only concern is the quality of the water.  With all the crap in our water systems I do not know how clean the Vaal river is anymore.  Anyways, I will go give it a try.

we have a farm next to komado drift there

plain yellow float on both hooks
super cast mielie bomb

Dips work in these combos any dips with these base flavours
Carp + baber takes this

almond + banana
banana + pine apple
fx + perdeby
used it this weekend and it works !!

I am going to be fishing the upper vaal near Lindequesdrif next week, just below the barrage.Does anyone perhaps have any info if the fish have started to spawn?

Would be interesting to know, I've been reading all the posts about fish spawning at Harties, Bronkies at the moment, does this mean fish are spawning allover  coz of the seasonal changes? What does it mean for us anglers, i.e. what impact does spawning have on the fish biting?

I was up in the streams on sunday and the barbel and carp are in the spawning areas but has not started but i think they will be starting soon

Below barrage at Erina I had some success during April this year on earthworm, the carp could not leave it alone! Also yellow floatie with dough backing no dip, later when it became quiet used polo dip. At Abramsrust oneday the fish were only taking brown bread (plain or with beer), also around April/May.

Well they must be happy with Plain Brown bread only as they will not get any beer from me L.O.L.

Where is the best (a good) place to launch a boat to fish the barrage for bass. Is the whole barrage open water, i.e. can one go anywhere with a boat or are there restricted areas. Also, where is a nice affordable resort/place to overnight with chalets, rondawels etc.
