morning ragman

you boil them in the shells after you have scrubbed the shells with a nail brush to take off the gunge , try remove the beards the stringy bits as well . You can only eat the ones that are open after about 5mins of boiling. All closed muscles must be removed and discarded do not attempt to eat those they can cause sea food poisoning. this is for muscles you want to eat. For bait i use them raw.

Hi Ragman, Do exatly as Kirk said, t en try this, it is deliceous. Remove the shell that does not have the meat in, now add a few drops of Tobasco/Nandos sauce put some mayonase over then cover with a slice of chease, bake in oven or on braai till chease is melted. Bon apatite

Also a god idea to leave them in a bucket of sea water for about 20 mins. They open and spit out any sand they have inside which is a lot better than you doing it. Any ones that float throw away, if in doubt throw away, a sick mussel will make you even sicker.

You can also try frying the mussel in butter and crushed garlic after removing them from the open shells. not more than a minute or so, just to combine the flavours.

Dont know about crab though, sorry.

another idea is after you have boiled them (make sure you have picked some big black mussel shells on the beach) you place 3-5 mussels into one big black mussel with a little carlic butter, some tabasco and cover it with some grated cheese. place on grid on a low fire and wait for cheese to melt, while you wait for the cheese to melt cut some slices of bread into finger strips and then you get stuck in eat the mussels and dip the bread in to the sauce.

Here's my favourite. Make a "sauce" with olive oil, squeeze of lemon, crushed garlick and freshly chopped chilli.

Remove the cooked mussels fom the shells and put them in the sauce. The mussels just need to be coated and dont have to "swim' in the sauce.

Enjoy as a pre-dinner or braai snack with bread fingers or salticrax.

Also check that you don't collect mussels during red-tide, this can be very dangerous.

They are affected as they are filter feeders
