Sort the flea problem. You have to kill them where they live/breed.

You sure it's not sand flea picked up on the beach?.

For a cheaper food source you can get pets mince from the vet (make sure there's no chicken in it if you want, my friend's JR is not allergic to chicken), and while cooking it add in some rice.
Lasts longer and is probably more healthier than canned food as well.

thanx guys so far once a year when their itching starts we go to the Vet he just gives them a Cortazone injection and i know it's not good for them so i would rather use some thing like a cream ect.... any way thanx JJ
Another friend's dog developed some sort of skin problem and everything the vet gave them didn't work (but cost a bit though).

So in the end they bought a natural Aloe cream from Clicks for R30 and that solved the problem. As you may know Aloe is excellent for the skin.

we bathed the dog with johnsons baby shampoo this weekend and it looks as there is a slight improvement on the skin. just hold yhumbs that it might be the dog shampoo that caused the reaction.

Afetr we gave our JR a wash in normal dog shampoo we also used the aloe tabs and aloe lotion and seems to work wonders for her.

Dip with DAZZLE, if the rash is too bad, take him to the Vet and specifically ask for PRETNEZONE, it costs about R5 for 50 tablets, give one tablet a day for 3 days, then one every second day for 6 days, then one every 3 days for 9 days, eventually you will have them on a tablet a week.

This has done wonders for my one that has a contact allergy for grass

Not sure but I speak under correction but i'm almost sure that PRETNEZONE is a form of cortisone and the long term effects are not good for the doggie.... Just concerned thats all. quick call to a pharmacist will sort that one out.

That's why I say to take him to the VET first, my one has been on it now for almost 10 years without any problems

The dog may be infected with mites living in/under the skin, excema products are good - from Virbac - check with the vet!
Sand flies - use citronella spray from the pet shop.
Use flax seed oil in the food 1 tblspn per meal, helps develop a shiny healthy coat and prevents fleas etc from hosting on the dog. Oil every day for the dog, even sunflower or olive oil is good too, as well as 1 tblspn of oil from fried boerewors!
Another product you can try is EFAZOL, ask the vet for advice.
Blood test also a good thing to determine whats klapping inside?

Good luck....ive got hassels with my boerboel too!!

Hi Bennie
I have two jack rubbishes who have the same problem , its definitely related to fleas and mites. I used "program" with mixed results . We recently are using a product called "Advocate" think Bayer make it- this kills fleas, mites worms etc a multi attack type spot on you use every 3/4 weeks seems to work so far. You can get it at the vet about 70/80 rond per application.
Hope this helps
cheers Kirk

Got the same hazzels, give them 1 tablet of Allergex when they have a bad spell of scratching, helps a lot, will also try not to give chicken.

Can anyone suggest food types , I see this thread was started in 2009 , so there might have been other products that came on the market, using Montego at the moment that contains ostrich meat as far as I know.

Hi,

Had the same problem with my JR, after spending R3000+ on vet visits and medication for the treatment of demodectic mange (apparently a common problem for JR’s) , a friend suggested I use Ectodex, two treatments over four days and problem solved. Just mix it in a 1ltr spray bottle and thoroughly wet the dog, and let it dry naturally. It also works for ticks and fleas (lower dosage).

I use it once a month during summer and I have no problem whatsoever with ticks or fleas, despite weekly visits to the beach, and cost wise it's much better than frontline.

With regards to food, my dogs don't like molteno and it doesn't last well at the coast (my experience). I feed them pedigree beef/steak flavour (for Medium dogs - they don't like the small breed stuff)

Cheers
Fanie
