Hey Guys

Just got some braided line for the surf and after playing around with it I decided to buy some for my bass reels. Do I need to tie a leader or just put the hook/lure straight on to the braid? If so, must I use a swivel or just join the lines?

Thanks

You should put on a fluorocarbon leader unless you are frogging in which case you can just tie the braid on to the froggie! I have tried to like braid a few times but just can’t get to like it… it's the joining of braid to fluorocarbon part that gets me… I hate knots…

The braid to fluoro leader is surely the 'weak link' when it comes to braid. That's why I always finish my knots with a drop of UV glue (used for fly tying).

While on the subject of lines, don't you just hate people that fish with 3 wet lines in tournaments?

just use black perm marker and make about 2m of the line black. if you fish carolina rig. tie the braid to the swivel and leader to you hook!

I am personally not a braid fan, it does however have a very sensitive feel to the fight and direct action.

The line is moss green so it should blend in in the water. I heard the main reason a fc leader is used is so the fish don't see the line, but the guy at the fishing shop said that only one in like 100 fish will bother about that. Also heard that the reason a leader is used is because of the minimal streach of braid, it's easy for the line to snap if the fish hits the lure hard and the line doesn't streach. so the leader gives that bit of play. Is this accurate?

not too sure about the braid snapping, braid is normally very strong with a thin diameter. 30lb braid prop has the same diameter as 8lb mono. You could pull the hooks straight though.

I also think the whole thing about fish being able to see the line and not bite depends on where you fishing. Farm dams etc shouldn't be a problem cause the fish arn't as wiery as dams that are fished more often. Nut then again these are only my thoughts, I might be wrong?

Firstly Braid floats.

I don't like braid on baitcasters as if you get an overwind it tends to be nasty due to the thin dia. I only use it on Coffee grinders.

I use it on spinning sticks to throw small lures etc - the thin DIA gives you more distance. There is no stretch in braid - it is super sensitive but it FLOATS so your lures donot go down as deep as what they should using mono.

I don't fish with leaders - Knots make for weak points. I normally fish with 10lb braid - I doubt the fish is going to notice it anyway.

Braid is great in Structure - it cuts through just about all vegetaion.

Braid is not nice on the hands when landing a fish because of it's thin dia it cuts very easily.

Hooks normally bend before the braid breaks
It also costs a small fortune - but some of my reels have had the same braid for over 2 years where I change mono every few month's.
I fish with neutral colour braid - green mostly

I mainly use the braid on my topwater rods, like Ryan says the braid floats and it improves the action of the bait if the line dont drag it down.

Best thing about braid for me.......

When you strike a big fish it makes that split second zzzzzzzzttt sound as the line tensions up through the guides, I love it

Fishton thanks - I know there are braids that sink but have you had a look of the price of sinking braid -eish....
