Hey Guys

Im still learning and I have been trying to catch my first GT for the past few years, i think it would be easier if i moved to Ballito.

My dad his mate and i are off to Cape Vidal this weekend, we have caught a few fish there but we are still beginners and i bought a new set up to try the sliding thing.

Im taking the following:

> 8ft dropshot, with flukes and other plastics 3inch,4inch and 5inch
> 12ft with a coffee ginder reel for small baits
> New Saltist 50 with 14ft rod to try slide(bought non return traces from the fishing shop)

Please could you guys help me with spots to slide and dropshot. Any specie I should be targeting? We have not stayed in vidal before and been in for the day so any other advice and what to take with?

Fish in front of the lighthouse to the south of the bay. Fish the bay late afternoon early mornings!

Walk south for a kilometre or two (right when you look at the sea), you will reach the south ledges. There is a nice bay for some light dropshot and deep ledges. Fish the incoming tide at night if possible, but be careful.

You want to cast as close to the rocks in the water to get the fish, so get some circle hooks to decrease snags and take along 30 or so sinkers (don’t slide the sinkers). Don’t fish heavier than a 3 ounce if the is no side wash.

Get some fresh pink prawn from a seafood shop (large size, for a 6/0 hook) and some very fresh sardines and get ready to have the rod pulled from your arms by a large speckled snapper.
Species; speckled snapper, cave bass, rockcod (even potato bass) the inevitable barbell and a few others, we usually fish at night.
I have seen large kingies, but have never caught a big one.

Use the drop shot rod and catch a livey(carenteen or shad) and slide it out of the rocks at lighthouse...

I have been fishing Vidal for a few years now and would recommend a visit to Mission Rocks. Beatiful Yellowbellies & some good Catface rockods are frequently caught here. Please bear in mind that these fish are quite territorial and could easily be overfished due to their aggressive nature. 

Dropshot off the rocks in front of the bay (in the sea's direction) at Vidal itself, provided myself and the kids with hours of pleasure. One morning we caught (and released) close to 40 blacktails in the 500 to 750g class. 5 cm pieces of cammo worm on a 1/8 ounce jighead. Look for a nice gully with white working water and fish the incoming tide.

A bit early in the season for Kingfish (late Oct, onwards) but you might still get some shad. I have seen some big Garrick come out on live shad in July and they might still be around. Just make sure the shad you use as livebait(slide) is size, as the "Parks Board" are forever present and they will ensure that you turn into an unhappy camper if you overstep.

Been a couple of 9-18kg Kingies off St Lucia in the past 2 weeks so chances of a Kingie around the lighthouse will be good and don't forget in the bay North of the boat launch area but don't cast to far on the low tide or you'll end up in the scattered reef that's around there

Just bear in mind the distance to the lighthouse is about a 5km walk.

Travel light!!!!!

The ledges in front of the lighthouse is a amazing spot. I have caught a 188kg Raggie there,seen a 30kg couta landed off the surf and Stumpies 5kg plus.

Whole chokka and dead shad is like GOLD for sliding there...

Carry at least 2 spools extra line. A group of my friends and I hooked into a shoal of Blacktip sharks there, due to the tide been high we landed zero. Those ledges are unforgiving...

Best fished on a spring low....

1 bad thing, you guys wont be there over the spring tides.

the ledges at the lighthouse, is best fished over a spring low tide.

but all is not lost.

remember gt are bad, really bad. if you hook into 1, be sure that it will find a rock. if there is no rock, 3 friends will surely bring a rock.

dont cast too far out

fish the turn of low tide. i have found, that 3 hours after the turn of low, we get pulls.

the reason for low tide is so that you can get close to the lip of the ledge.

also, walk up north. good fishing grounds. but you need to walk very far. up north, there are more rocks, and they are scattered.

never give up, they are there, right through the year, but more commonly found during summer months.

No offence mate, but definately not 5km walk to LH - measured from the bay, it's 1km max, but +/- 5km to the far south ledges (not many people fish the far south ledges anymore, due to distance from the bay)

Best thing is to go and measure it on Google earth.

We walk from missions to bats cave allot and it can feel very far but its about a 2km walk.

Its always best to walk low tide on the hard sand

Take some surface plugs and spend a day fishing the Mission rocks and Bat Cave area.

attach is the NCAU locality codes - the distance between two areas are measured in KM intervals e.g. Cape Vidal 3708 - Cape Vidal LH 3709, thats 1 km

Spot on! distance between Bats Cave 3725 and Missions 3727 is 2 km

Hi Ants, I'm also there over this weekend( leaving tomorrow morning )

so we can hook up if you want. I'm staying in the chalets( nr 8 I think...come say hi).

I have fished Vidal for over 37 years and despite the tough weather conditions at times in August it  is normally a good fishing month BUT only if the shad are around.

Gt's come into the bay at dusk on the pushing tide but I have always been reefed by the bigger ones( 15-20kg) in the bay...too many bricks around. Lots of smaller ones around in the surf up north and huge fun on plugs up to 2oz, Onde-Ondes and dropshot.

Best way to fish for them( thats what I do) is walk up north for about 4-5clicks early morning about 4am and as soon as it starts getting light you start walking back and fish the surf with spoons and plugs...vet pret!!

Sliding: we can catch a couple of shad in the bay late afternoon and slide them just before dark slightly further up north just past the rocks in the bay...large blackfins patrol the area and you are gonna get caned. If were lucky a big GT or Garricks will be around...the wind just looks a bit hectic but we'll see.

South ledges is great ( and the walk IS about 1- 2 clicks) but its  difficult to land big fish if you cant fish on a spring low( which we dont have this weekend). But nevertheless there are alot of smaller reefdwelling species around which gives endless fun on the light sticks.

@ juanp - point taken about the google earth BUT just remember the coast line at Vidal isn't straight... a windey road takes longer to travel on than a straight road!!!
