Hey guys, I'm a bit of a Vaalie so don't get to fish in the salt that much but I got a chance to explore Ramsgate a while ago and my dad and I got some new species that I cannot identify. Could someone help an inlander out please?^^..

A local said it was a five finger bream or something like that but I cannot find it on fishbase.

Roland30, I thought that too but when I checked it out here it looked different so I don't know. Think my dad got the first fish on pink prawn while looking for bronze bream. I got the wrasse while trying to catch a few Karanteen for bait with small hooks and squid.

First one is a spot sergeant. Relative of the sergeant major. Same family as damsels, chromis and anemonefish. As for the wrasse, I am unsure

Thanks for all the help guys. Aqua, I think you are spot on! Its definitely a black spot sergeant. The jury is still out on the wrasse though, although I think its either a juvenile rainbow or a cross between 2 species like Frank said.

Thanks for the help guys

Thank you very much for the info guys. I think you have it spot on there. Definitely a blackspot sergeant (Abudefduf sordidus - here is a pic)

It seems there are quite a few different species of rainbow wrasse but for the most part a rainbow wrasse has a swallow-like tail. But John F, I think you are correct with the wrasse being a "clouded wrasse" or Halichoeres nebulosus too. From this picture it definitely seems like it is the one I caught, especially the square tail. If you do manage to find out for sure by someone in the know please send me a pm or post it here.

Thank you very much for the help guys, really appreciated.

your second fish is a Picture Wrasse. A very common fish found in our local waters. I use to dive them for my marine tanks.

Yes I agree, it is definitely a red picture or clouded wrasse (Halichoeres nebulosus), thank you for the help!

You got these in the rock pools I suspect.

First fish is a Damsel Fish - Abudefduf Natalensis I think

Second Fish is a Rainbow Wrasse - Thalassoma Purpureum - Changing from Juvinile to Adult colours.
