Hey guys, I am in the market for a Shimmy Trini 30

Hey guys, I am in the market for a Shimmy Trini 30 or 40 and was wondering which one`s are the best, the old ones or the new ones?

Also, are they any better than the Tories? I have a 30 and 50 and the 30 just gives me trouble whereas the 50 is still hastle-free.

If anyone knows of a good 2`nd hand deal, preferably with braid, please let me know.

Dorsal - a DC is for damduikers like me who battling casting a normal multiplier, the DC allows you to get away with murder. Shot for shot no overwind and casting decent distances. I had a gold trini - i couldnt cast the thing but an awesome reel, others who can cast swear by the Gold trini`s or 30A`s. Torium is a 1 series BMW, Trini is an M3.

The Trini 30 gold has the same AR bearing as the Tor30. The new Trini 30A also has it. The Trini 30A has two pawls though.

The Trini Gold and Tor has only one pawl.

So which is better?

In order of workmanship and materials used. My opinion, at least.

Torium. Cheaper version of the Trinidad. Materials used and a few other parts. No centrifugal brakes. Made in Malaysia.
PrÍce new ±R1500.

Trinidad, gold. Materials used are of high quality. Extra centrifugal brake blocks(4)added to aid casting. Some peoe remove those. Also an extra dial of which purpose I still don't know. Maybe someone can enlighten me. Made in Japan.
Price new ±R3000

Trinidad DC. Quality materials and workmanship. Made in Japan. Extra Digital control.
Price new ±R5000.

Trinidad A series. Quality materials used. Double pawl. Slightly smaller and compact design. No centrifugal brakes. Casts like a bat out of hell. :) Made in Japan.
Price new ±R3500.

Just a layman's take on the reels. I'm by no means an expert or reel fundÍ.

Joker has summed-up and given you just about all there is to give.

Shimano released the newer Trinidad series A reels.
The golden series it seems discontinued.

No 40A or 50A series.

Shimano DC 20 and 30's are as bullet proof as the newer Trinidad A series.

Geez. That's lots of money to spend on a reel. R5000 is an uncomfortably big slice of my teacher's salary. Miss the days when the Shimano TLD 20/40 was the Shimano of choice. Even a Torium needs to be saved up for now.

torium and gold trini's work the same.. for big fish they need equal upgrades...

trinidad DC has a spring loaded pawl and carbon fibre washers as standard. casts very well with the DC disengaged (or engaged, depending on your preference)

trini A - havent used one so cant comment too much, apparently the best casting reel of the bunch. Good (perhaps the best?) drag system

Joker - the random dial is a ratchet tension adjuster... when fishing free-swimming livebait from boats, the reel is set on free-spool and the knob adjusts the tension on the ratchet.. in other words, it stops the livebait from taking line

Well noted Aqua...not many in the know regarding that clicker/ratchet tensioning device.

Trini A... yes casts all the way ~ no brakes, your thumb must learn to take control on the spool side.

Trini A is the best casting reel I have used and I have the Torium and the gold Trini 30`s.In fact it is the finest reel I have used.The only problem with it is that it is a hassle doing quick services,particularly if one is not particularly handy or has limited spare time. Opening it up is a lot more involved than the others.

i hav all 3


trini gold is in my opinion best allrounder for beach, mountain n reef... the dc & A requires more nursing and needs to be taken good care of, they are both strong but would not take is for a wade and then not clean clean it the evening after... that's asking for trouble...

the gold series has proven itself and has stood up to much abuse. they are scarce these days.

It was said that that dial was to help with casting. I knew I was right. Just confused me. :)
