I don't know from the surf. or your area, but here I've found that McArthy - 4" jerk minnow - baby elf works best on a 1/4 oz jighead. I've tried the 5", but it did not give the same results.

i dont know about dropshot , but one thing is damn sure , get yourself a HAVOC or two , deadly for
KOB, day ,night what ever !!! I have had VERY good catches in the past years , with HAVOCS ,being constantly producing the goods even better that bait , ask around , folks like Spyker and Carlos , i promise you , hard work to crack the 'code' but once cracked there NOTTING stopping you !!!!!!

it took me about 2 years to understand how to fish them , but HELLS BELLS its sooooooo worth it !!!!

for minnow type lures dont even bother if you're not using gulp hey. 5 & 7 inch chart. pepper neon or white/glow. Also that lumo pink 5inch gulp squid is a killer. You can try paddletails too.

in the daytime if you find a big shoal of them then non flavoured dropshots can work, but if they are one here one there then gulp is best, it leaves a scent trail that they can follow

The McArthy range is not biodegradable, like Ague said: "don't even bother"...I back him (gulp = cob)

Gulp might be a bit more expensive, but you land a lot more fish on one bait than the std plastic ones. Goedkoop is duurkoop.

The Lazer pro red and white will also work, even a two-tone spoon might do the trick sometimes

Good luck

Havoc you will find in PE , well thats where i got some of mine and i believe its manufactured in PE , dont wanna hi jack this thread , but do a search on lure fishing for Kob , and you guys will find some info , check Spykers thread of how the read the water , the 'code ' wel theres no code in that sence of the word , but it just take time to figure out how to fish the surf succesfully with lures , spend some time ,it took me 2 years ,buts well worth it .

I love fishing with them , long casts and retrieve as slow as possible , just keep it moving , you will feel the bites , look theres plenty ways of being successful you can cast over gulleys on a bank , so my thoughts on this is that as the lure moves from the sand bank over the 'drop off' thats where they will eat it , Cobs patrol these drops up and down in search of food so when you pulling your lure over the gulley , obviously you are still in the strike zone , as you come out of the gulley on the the shallows ,  you have a damn good chance again , if you have a long gulley running not parallel with the beach , cast on the sides on the drop offs , what helped me alot was just to check out the water ,FISH HARD, fishing lighter  line . colours that worked very well for my was the mullet , redhead , carrot , and fire tiger , black and whites , theres a couple of lures on the market that you can try , Havocs in my book are the best , second best i would say is the rappies , magnums [plastic lipped ones ]

Remove trebles , and get weighted ones on there, your lure will be close to 4 0z , you can make a proper cast !

Havocs last time i got some [it was a long time ago ] i paid like 60 bucks for one , cool thing is that fishing from sandy beaches you dont loose them , i have a couple of them that are 'retired' see the thread on the havoc theres pics of some of them .

i reckon a Havoc will put you back round about 120 to 150 , best shot is to fone up Commercial or some tackle place in PE and ask them !

Hi U Star

Your best bet for Huisklip will most likely be jigheads ranging from 1 to 2oz and jerk shads 5 and 7 inch,I wont go into the whole gulp versus macarthy arguament, make sure that youve got some bright and dark coulers, general rule, dark day/water,dark lure and vica verca.
Look for gutters with banks THAT YOU CAN REACH,if you cant reach the bank, move on,no matter how good it looks, youll be surprised to see in what shallow water youll catch kob.Dropping tides are normally better, but end of the day it all depends on the formation.
Kob can be caught at night, but you need to know where and what you are casting at.
Keep trying,its worth it!!!

You can also target Kob in our river mouths using spoons like the “Slim Spoon”.  You would need to throw onto a sandbank with the tide pushing over it quite strongly, letting your slim spoon sink to the bottom and then retrieving it ultra slowly.

Found this while googling "Cob catching". Wonder what a "Slim Spoon" is.

I think the most important thing is not necessarily the lure, but the rate of retrieval.. If you think you retrieving slow!! SLOW down some more!

paddle tail :)

AMEN ! I would also go with a paddle tail. You will have to use a half oz or 1oz, or even heavier to get distance. Go with bigger paddle tails and a slow retrieve throw the hole.

Someone talking sense

Plastic works, fish just don't hold as long onto it as they do onto something "that tastes like fish" ... anyways, once you bite onto a gulp you'll immediately know it's not the real thing

Personally believe it's sales talk.
