i would much rather go to loskop some dik bass coming out that side and lot better camping area for the girlfriend. mokolo is one awsome dam.camping wise no warm water or power points to charge batterys for the boat will have to take a generator. the road i always use is on the N1 then nylstroom, vaalwater towards ellisras.

Waterdog,I live in Ellisras.Mokolo or the old Hans Strydom dam is EXTREMELY frustrating to fish bass. The water is clear/clean(maybe too clean, nothing even grows in the water except for isolated spots) I;ve HEARD of one or 2 big fish coming out but I sure as hell have never seen them or photos of them!!! Lotsa 400 to 800 gr's though!!! Ur best bet is to try and get to the Malmani or Mokolo river inlets into the dam.If you dont have a boat YOU ARE WASTING UR TIME!!!All the locals fish in the "sloepie" close to the main entrance and that is about the only spot you can fish from the shore so IT IS OVER FISHED!

The fees are high if you consider that you are actually paying for nothing other than running water(if the pump isn't broken down!!!).No electricity or hot water. One set of new ablution blocks(and another in process of being built for the last 6 to 8 mnths)and a set of showers/longdrops that all genders share while they are busy building the newer ablutions.

I have a boat and its only 45km's drive but to me its not worth the hassle...

As for camping primitavely and enjoying the outdoors/nature its great... if you dont mind paying for nothing.

Oh yes,the Vaalwater road is under construction so the Stop/Go points on a Friday afternoon when the contractors all rush home from ellisras and back again on a Sun can be time consuming. The Warmbaths road is probably the best option but its 75km;s further. The Brits Thaba road is the one I use but it is also VROT vani potholes! Anyway,I assume THATS a common NSA phenomena...

Dr d thanks a lot for this invaluable info. I was really battling to decide what to do. Recon I will hold out a bit longer on this dam got a boat but the distance and now road works really puts me off to go all the way for only a night . I will give it a go one day but I think u saved me plenty frustration . Thanks again looks0 like a day trip to renosterkop then !

Waterdog is that Mugal or Mogol? The Mogol river definately has bass!!!!!I fish it every weekend. The Palala river also has bass even though the locals try and maintain that there is none.I've caught quite a few though I am concerned about the health/quality of the fish in the Palala system. The FIRST fish i caught in the Palala weighed in at 2,6kg.That was 6 years ago and at the time i thought a croc got to it seeing as it had sever scarring and wounds on the one side.I recently saw pics of this epizootical ulcer whatever and now I am convinced the fish was a carrier...

Dont get me wrong,Mokolo dam is a great boating destination. The quiet/solitude bush setting is GREAT!!! BUT there are better fishing spots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And the rates they charge in my opinion is not justified. Maybe we are just spoiled, used to the old Hans Strydom that we knew YEARS ago where you could camp almost for free....
