Hey all

Anyone know of a place in Jhb where I can buy some good quality tuna or salmon steaks? At the moment I buy from the Pick n Pay in Little Falls or William Nicol but looking  for one or 2 other places. I live in the South, work in Sandton but travel to the East,West and Fourways on a weekly basis so area is not too much of an issue.

I have also noticed that most Tuna sold in Jhb is Albacore , ideally what characteristics should I be looking at when buying Tuna or Norwegian/Scottish Salmon ?

Any recipes that I should try? I have kept it straight forward with lemon, pink salt and pepper on the salmon and pepper with sesame seeds on the tuna.

Many Thanks Anthony

Only place I know of that has fresh tuna is seven seas fisheries. It's near cresta on Beyers Naude. They also have fresh Norwegian and Scottish salmon. They will skin and fillet the salmon for you, but don't take out the pin bones. I think the tuna is also albacore or big eye, but its fresh and pretty good. I have tried several of the other places like rio Ouro and they don't get fresh tuna.

Thanks Richard,I will definitely try them out as they seem to have favourable feedback on a few different web pages .The Impala Meat Market on Beyers is a top notch Butchery ,so I can kill two birds with one stone when Im in the area. Cheers Ant

I Havent been able to get to the 7 seas yet but have tried a few other shops and for whats its worth

- Fruit and veg at the Wedge in Sandton - Scottish and Norwegian salmon did not look very appetising. It looked "pap" and was wading in some water - Gave it a skip 2/5

-Food Lovers Market Park Meadows , only salmon available - did not like the colour , it had a few brown spots and once again the flesh was not firm. 2/5

The search continues, hopefully I can go past 7 seas this week and give them a rating

Their salmon is first class, never had a bad piece of salmon from them. Always bright pink and firm. If you want tuna, it is best to order the day before as supply is limited and it goes pretty quick. You need to be there early in the morning if you do not order. It is normally gone before 10h00.

If you go on a sat morning you can sometimes get a beer and snack while you do your shopping!!

Its a winner, I think there is actually a sealiner that works there as well??

Ant, as you know those Albacore arent lekke!

I wont waste my money on that tripe, I will rather get pilchards in tomatoe sauce.

A method to try on Albacore, which is eaten widely in the Med, is to marinade; use dry white wine and bay leaves with some pepper/salt/olive oil.

Thanks Psy ,that recipe sounds delicious and yes its all Albacore . I must confess that I have been getting some decent Tuna at my local Woolworths for a half decent price.

I learnt from the Japanese many things. One of them is the meat and Liver of the Sunfish is prized.
Blackfin/Bluefin/Big eye Tuna are specialist fish that take high dollar at the fish markets in Japan. - used and eaten as Sashimi.
Yellowfin not rated as highly neither, seldom used in sashimi (in Japan)
Albacore or Longfin is a very bland Tuna meat, with few if not any oils in the flesh.
The fish are never cleaned or gutted, but filled with water to be blast frozen (to increase the weight of the fish)
Albacore is then utilsed as a canned fish and packed in brine or added to pastes and spreads.

So getting back to the longfin, its very dry/tasteless.
my 2 cents.
