Here is probably my most memorable fish.... for a couple reasons...

We all have our dream fishing destinations right? Those faraway places you see in magazines, or see pictures of and one day dream of going.... I've been very lucky in that I have fished some really amazing places.... 5 Years spent in the caribbean meant 5 years of fishing everyday in paradise for Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook, Snapper, Tuna, Wahoo etc.... Then on to Canada where I fished those dream BC rivers.... Back home growing up was a blast with my Dad being a crazy fisherman too, so all holidays were spent at the water with rod in hand.... Some great fish and fishing in the Transkei, The Berg, Zululand Coast, the Zambesi, Mozambique...... Lots of dream destinations...

But through all this, the Seychelles has always been that one destination that I saw as being above all else.

Life moved on, I came back from the Caribbean/Canada, got back into the working life and while those dreams of Seychelles were still in place, well they seemed less and less possible.

But it happened in April 2005. My Dad, and best fishing partner, decided ( with alot of pushing from Mom ) that we should just bloody well do it!! Yes, its gonna break the bank wide open, but when would we ever have the chance again???
Fly Cataways had a late cancellation on their "Paydirt" Trip, and my old man made the call at the right time and Gerhard of Castawyas said he had a spot for us...
The trip was 10 days, fishing both Cosmoledo and Farquhar, based on board a mothership, the Indian Ocean Explorer......

Mad frantic flytying and tackle buying ensued and before I knew it, we were there..... Now we were the only two okes on board who weren't from Joburg, and the other guys had booked months in advance, so they had had lots of prep time, and meetings and what not to let them know what to expect.... Either way, nothing can prepare you for Cosmo......NOTHING! No pictures, no story, no video, no dreams..... Its impossible to prepare yourself for this place!!

I could go on forever, but I'll get to the fish.

Its was day 3 I believe, our second last on Cosmo before a 36 hour sail to Farquhar.. One of the rubber duck tenders had just picked up our group of 6 anglers and Arno Mathee who was guiding us that morning, while Gerhard was with the other group.... We had been fishing all morning on the flats, getting into hundreds of bonefish, GT's, snapper, Bluefin Trevally, Triggers etc etc etc.... But the tide was coming in like a river now, so we were on our way back to the Mothership ( when the tide ocmes in on these Atolls, its like a dam wall just collapsed! Its MOVES!!! )
As we were exiting the Atoll through one of the many channles between the myriad of little islets, Arno suggested we stop off on one and see what fish wer coming in through the channels with the incoming tide..... Smart man is that Arno!
We pulled the boat up to the side of an isletc about 60 metres by 25 metres in size and 6 tired anglers treked over to the other side wher there was a ledge sitting about half a metre under water and running about 40 metres out at an angle from the island.....
Even after 3 insane days of mind blowing fishing, nothing prepared us for what we saw.... Sitting on this ledge, not 5 metres from us, in water barely covering their backs, was a shoal of GT's, at least 30 fish, facing the incoming current waiting to see what would come their way. Now just cause they were in a shoal, doesn't mean they were "schoolies" some of these fish were in the 70 to 80 pound class!!
All hell broke loose as 6 anglers tried to get lines in the water!!! Of course with buck fever, pretty much all of us cocked up!! I remeber Arno shouting "For f@*k sakes okes, forget casting, just put your fly in the water!!!" When these Kingies are schooled up, they will compete for an eat everything and anything!
I swung my fly out made one false cast, getting the fly out no more than 4 metres and before I could strip I was in...The fish nearly pulled me off the rocky crag I was standing on as my drag was locked as tight as it could be ( you have to fish like this in Cosmo, or you just loose lines and fish )... A 4 seconds later the line went slack.... Curses filled the air but before I could even think about stripping in again, the bloody fish turned around and nailed the fly again!!!!

This time I made sure of the hookset!!!

The rest of the fight was a blur of power and speed...something difficult to put into words.... But after about 10 minutes, and me now standing in water waist deep, Arno wrapped a gloved hand around my prize.... Without a doubt the finest fish I have ever had the priveledge of landing....

What made this fish the most memorable, was that it was my dream fish, in my dream destination. But mostly it was that my old man was right there at my side, beaming and laughing like the proud and amazing father he is, who without, I would never have been here... Thanks Dad.

Dad's dream was always a big GT too, and he nailed his fair share! My proudest moment, was on our last day, last session, and basically last cast, he nailed a bus GT, which I tailed for him and shot this pic.

A fitting end to the finest trip either of us could have dreamed of..... Thanks Dad!

And here is another.... Same trip, different fish... I wasn't even the angler on this one, but I bore witness to it, and it was INSANE!!!

Cosmoledo Atoll is a very vast and intimidating place…. Something which all the anglers on this trip were made very well aware of on our first day’s fishing…. The fish, the sea life, the boundless flats, the razor sharp coral, the sharks…they all come together to give an extreme jolt to ones senses that is difficult to describe.
But probably the most intimidating, as well as dangerous thing on Cosmo, is the tide, and the speed and force with which it moves….. The day before this fish was taken, Armand and Garth Wellman came dangerously close to being swept away by an incredibly fast moving tide, carrying with it some very large Tiger Sharks….. To give you an idea of the tides, my Dad and myself along with Arno and a couple other guys were fishing a long the edge of a flat along a channel drop looking for GTs ( and we found a few!!! ) We were about maybe 250 to 300 metres from the hightide mark on the one little island and standing in water no deeper than 4 or 5 inches…. Suddenly Arno says, “ Lets go guys, tides coming” I looked around at the miles of 4 inch deep water around me and though” So what? We’re only 300 metres from land and its 4 inches deep!!” But when one is in the middle of nowhere, one trusts your guide, especially one as experienced in these waters as Arno, so we started moving…..
Folks I can tell you, those 300 metres were some of the scariest of my life! By the time we reached 50 metres from shore, the water was around our waists, and moving at around 4 to 6 knots!!! We were pushed to the limit to make headway against it! If we had waited another 5 minutes on that channel edge, we might not have made it back…..

Garth and Armand were on the other side of the channels, where all this water was coming in….. Wisely they had started moving long before us, but still ended up having to swim a fair way in some hectic water to make there way to us……

I tell you all this to kind of set the scene for this fishy tale….. Garth and Armand had done incredibly well in the area they fished, which was made up of a lattice work of channels, sand and grass flats, with potholes and coral heads scattered around…perfect GT water! I forget how many they caught and but they were certainly well entertained!!! They swore they’d be back the next day, but be sure to get the boat to come pick them up rather than risk the channels again!!!!

That evening, Dad decided to head out for Bonefish in the morning, and Garth and Armand invited me to fish with them at “GT Central” There stories of the days fishing had me drooling, and as I had yet to take a big GT ( by Seychelles standards) I was all over it!

W got dropped off on a small coral island at about mid dropping tide, and started the 400 odd metre walk across the flats to get to the channels. On the way we picked up a goodly number of Bluefin Trevally, as well as the odd Blue Spangled Emperor and Yellow Lipped Emperor…. We didn’t see any sign of the GT’s till we reached the edge of the flat and the deeper channels.
We started seeing fish, and casts were made, flies were obliterated, but the fish had the best of us….. Armand had two incredible GT’s spit his fly, and Garth lost a beautiful Black GT that came swimming across the flat with not even enough water to cover his back!!! As the tide got to full low, we started heading back towards the channel apex…. Armand and Garth were ahead of me, about 50 metres when we saw a big shape coming fast across the flats. Garth Cast, then Armand Cast…. No reaction….. I cast and just as I did, I heard them shout “ Milkie!” I looked up to see where my fly was and gave it one strip and found myself foul hooked to a rather large and rather pissed off Milkfish swimming in a foot and a half of water!!! This bugger proceeded to strip a good hundred yards of string off a completely locked down reel before the hook pulled!!! So the morning started!!!
Wehen we got to the hotspot, the fish were everywhere, mainly big Bluefin Trevally, of which we took a good number. These fish are more beautiful than should be legal, and unfortunately, as often happens when one is spoiled, they became pests as they would often snatch a fly intended for a bigger GT ( Who ever heard of 5 to 8 kilo Bluefin Trevally being pests!!!) Garth also took a monster of a Blue Spangled Emperor, a true bus of around 8 kilos. Here is a beauty of Armand’s

Armand was doing damage to the Bluefin, but the GT’s were evading us…. The Garth spotted a nice GT coming down the channel and kindly gave me first shot. Long story shot, this is what happened:

At the time my biggest GT by far, and I was juiced to the max!!! After the pics and release, we moved maybe 15 metres to another narrow channel in the flat, no more than 3 metres wide, which ran about 30 metres away from us before emptying into the main channel….

I looked to the mouth of the channel and saw what I thought was a shark, 2 of them, coming up the channel. I suddenly realized that these were two of the biggest GT’s I would ever see. I pointed them out to Garth who was standing next to me, but he’d seen them already and his fly line was in the air….. One false cast and he let her fly….. And she flew true! The fly landed about 6 metres in front of the lead fish, and all hell broke loose! Those two fish were swimming over eachother with their back and eyes out of the water and huge maws thrashing in an attempt to grab the fly first! Luck held true and the bigger of the pair got there first….. And she turned and left a foam filled hole in the crystal clear water as she took off acroos the flat, sending water everywhere and straight into the deeper channel. Armand and I were dumbstruck and Garth was just trying to hang on for dear life!!!
With a completely locked drag ( and I mean locked!!! As in you physically battle to pull line off by hand! ) this fish took 60 metres of backing with ease! Garth’s 12 WT was bent straight!!!

I could write for ages about the fight, but I won’t. All I will say is that this fished KICKED GARTH’S ASS!!! Big time!!!! After about 20 minutes of sweating bullets, he had her right on the edge of the channel….. Armand was in charge of tailing the beast…. He went at it with two heavily gloved hands…. I remember it so clearly, he needed both hands to get a grip on the knuckle at the base of the tail and as soon as he grabbed her he dived with both knees, inot the water to hold her tail because if he didn’t, the fish would have swum off with him hanging on to her tail!!!!
As soon as he had her secure, Garth dropped his rod in sheer exhaustion and let out a shout of pure stoke and realsing that he had just landed an absolute dream….. It was amazing, I felt very very privileged to be standing there and witnessing it.

Of course we had the photo session, during which Garth could barely lift the fish due to her weight and how buggered he was……. If you look at the shots , especially the one of the mouth, you get an idea of how wide and heavy this beast was….. It still blows me away 18 months later!!!

When it came time to release her she was fighting strong again and with a gentle shove, Garth let her swim off, and she finned away strongly, none the worse for her ordeal…. Garth was a different story all together… The adrenaline, the physical strain, and the pure joy had left him knackered!!! He grabbed his leader, and clipped the fly off and turned back to the channel, took a long look at the fly, then drew his arm back and threw the fly back into that beautiful water that had just blessed him with the fish of a hundred lifetimes…..
“ Thanks guys, I’m done for the day…..” he said, a pretty fitting end to what for me was magic, for Armand too I know, and for Garth, well I don’t think words could do it justice…...

Nepptune you are a legend cause you've had adventures most of us can only dream of(let us know wen the book is being released..i'd like to shoplift a copy)
what really tugs at the heart strings is the fact that you could share this trip with your dad...sum of us would love those memories...my dad and i only started bonding just before my son was born but no worries i get to build good fishing memories with my boy(he will be 3 on 19/03)and the plus is that "oupa" gets to be on our photo's as well.
Guy's...my 2c worth...fishing should'nt be about escaping the old ball and chain or screaming kids it could also be about building relationships and good memories, so if ever you are out at broken road or pallekies in strandfontein wether early morning or sunset look out for spongie and his mini me(not that mini me..my son)and you'll probably see 2 of the happiest blokes in earth and maybe one day my boy could rite so passionately about me as Nepps does his dad ...thats how a man leaves behind a good legacy

Nepps ---What a trip in every sense of the word.Absolutely classic pics every one of them. They really add the context that was missing when you told me the stories. What a place .What an epic. For everyone. But especially your Toppie.Last day .Last session and some things are just meant to be I suppose. When youre an old bullet one day it will still be ....jaaaa....THAT trip....
I cant believe those Bluefish either. Thats some seriously electric colour. Must look mindblowing through polarised shades when its schooling in that crystal water. I reckon i would be happy with the smallest of those GTs too but as for that bucketmouth pantechnicon of Garths ......all I can say is no wonder those GT poppers are so big. Mouthsize to bodyweight ratio is just a joke.Im pretty sure I would also have just stopped for the day.You couldnt top that if you tried..........
