Some of the old photos are classic. Attached is the current SA Records up to April 2012 (Just before Nationals)
A few days ago Garret Staats shot and gutted a Natal Knifejaw which weighed 3.17kg which still (luckily for him) weighs more than the current SA Record. I'm just in the process of ratifying it but at this point all looks fine. Just have to dot all the i's and cross all the t's.
A pic was shown of Emil's huge GT. Unfortunately the record could not be ratified as he was not a member of SAUFF. I have unfortunately, had to disqualify a few more records before and since then due to divers not being paid up members of SAUFF.
You will also notice that compared to the list on SA Spearfishing, the new list has many more fish.
Angelo Spada used the list and determined he had shot 117 species on it. My record stands at 96. Mostly due to the fortune of diving competitively and opportunity to dive around the country.
Always keep meticulous records of EVERY fish you shoot. If it is a PB or suspected record (club, provincial or national) you cannot have too many photos. Also get the fish weighed on a calibrated scale.
Thre have also been a few sob stories of guys gutting their fish only to see later the weight was just below the current SA Record. A few years ago I shot a PB Split Paint Parrot and only when I became the SA Records officer 1.5 years later did I realise it was bigger than the current SA Record. Unfortunately the time to claim had long since expired. "Lckily" a bigger one was shot by, and still held by Garret Staats.
In a cruel twist of fate, Garret also holds the unfortunate record of holding the shortest record. Less than a day. He broke the Dusky Yellowtail record held by the late, great, Paul Kolenda and less than 24 hours later Craig Heslop shot a bigger one. To add insult to injury, he had just paid his R100 application fee when Gyula phoned me from the boat to ask what Garret's fish weighed. I dived with Garret the day before and was supposed to dive with Gyula that day, but when I couldn't make it, he asked Craig if he was keen.
On another occassion, good friend Fanus Gerber (also holds the Scotsman and Gallie record - photo posted earlier) and I were diving with Koos Jordaan off Lighthouse. Every dive I was down I was surrounded by a massive school of Queenfish that swarmed me so much I couldn't see anything else but Queenies. Eventually I got gatvol and told Fanus he could dive. His first dive down he shot a Queenfish and as he tossed it on the boat. I said it's an SA Record. He then asked me if I saw them and whey didn't I shoot it. At the same time I realised my folly and remarked that there were bigger ones there. But they seemed to realise what was coming and dissappeared. I would later tell Fanus that it was Karma as a few years ago, while still living in PE we dived st Francis and Fanus shot a bus of a Tail. 20-25kg. While trying to get it into the hatch I managed to lose the fish overboard. Anyway, that night we celebrated his record (although he still tells the Yellowtail story with great relish at any opportunity)
