The reel is designed with a level winder thingy. It runs horizontally while you are winding in your line, thus "spreading" your line evenly on the spool. Sorry if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Thanks for your replies.
Based on the reply's I am going to do the following:-
I think I will be able to do short-line fishing in a River and bank casting in a Dam for Carp.
Buy a reasonably priced bait caster / feeder.
 I want a reel to be used for short line fly-fishing. I mean that the reel must be able to bring in the very light tackle. My old coffee grinder tends to be too loose on the spool and ends up winding all over the place because the line is too slack.
Buy a matching rod +- 10 feet long.
Buy the “wetsuit” to wade in the river. I am going to try the Vaal River first. I really enjoy River fishing as I used to hunt grunter in the Swartkops River.
I will go and get advice at the tackle shop this weekend as I have a few questions:
Can I use the same rod and reel for short line fly-fishing and Bank casting in a Dam for Carp? If not I will buy Carp tackle later.
