well, cast out, and reel back in and vary your speeds between casts till you find the speed thats working, cranks i find work best when there is a bit of a chop on the water, also cranks work well on rocky points, use a light to medium rod and mono line, when you hook a fish DON'T stike, just pull on the rod, or else you will pull the hook outa the basses mouth.

It's not as much the kind of water that decides what type of lures but rather what the fish have to eat in that specific body of water coupled with the seasonal patterns..... so you can use any lure in any piece of water, the only thing that will make it a killer lure as opposed to lures that make you pull out your hair is the right identification of the food source, the correct weather reading and then the correct application of the lure you've chosen (sometimes varied makes a huge difference)....  holy carp, now i don't even understand what i just said, if you don't get it i'll try explaining again.......::S

Bud, there's a couple of places out south of the civilized world (pretoria) but i lost my gun when i left the force and hence don't venture out that way much, unless it's in hunting parties of three or more (armed) I've had some gr8 sucess at the plaat north of pta, also at vasfontein, but down south nada niks and you can leave the jerk and slash baits at home if you're going to bass lake they don't chow that over there....

I personnaly think one of the best lures to start of with if your a beginner is a spinner bait, this is a really affective lure, a little bit cheaper than crankbaits.
Spinners can be used in any vegetation, logs etc.
Spinners can be fished very slow or fast.
Mono line.
My recomended colours would be black, chartruese or white, but this is your choice and depends on the colour of water.
Just my 2c

I would have to Say the Salmo hornet no 4 is the most versatile lure - to date I have caught 19 species of fish on them.....

Skaaptjop - Nice road maps.............LOL

Problem is they are fairly hard to come by.
Mia's wood mead stocks a few as does Solly's - best is to ask them to source some for you.
Gani's in Witbank has by far the best selection but the problem is they are well in Witbank.....
Bassworld in Centurian, Angling africa in Centurian, Western Accessories in Boksburg mainly it is confined to the bigger tackle stores.
The Lure pictured with Skaaptjop is secret Weapon 101 redhead

You can fish them fast, slow, erratic, on the bottom etc - they work..........

My personal best colours are dace, real perch, hot perch, Hot Pink, black tiger.
