Your BEST bet is join a club!! Go to sasaa's website and find a club near you! You can register for free if under 16(or that is the plan i hear) or you can join as social member and pay R300 max a year in membership fees!

I'm no shark expert but that guy at the shop was talking rubbish. Get yourself a decent shark outfit(rod and reel). what's your budget like for a decent outfit. also post up pictures here on sealine of your slide traces etc, anything that you are not sure about and the guys will gladly tell you whats right and wrong and how it can be improved or modified.

Here's a decent shark outfit for you:
Saltist 50BG with 600m braid and 200m of 0.55mm topshot.
Purglas 350/6
This will set you back around R5000

Look bud I'm not gonna lie to you, shark fishing is a very expensive form of fishing. Remember it's around R12 a sinker, R30 a wind-on,R12 a hook,R12 a slide, line.......... so ja it's it's expensive and not to mention the price of the bait.

Hey. Look at a daiwa sealine 40 and then maybe a loomis shockwave that can throW a 9oz sinker. This would be about R2000-R2300.

1) That is WAAAYY overkill for a inexperienced 16 year old boy!!! How many times have you seen your braid in the past year except for putting it on taking it of then putting it back and then joining on some more?
2) That rod is going to kill him especially because he can't cast big baits and heavy sinkers yet
3) He CAN'T cast a penn style(multiplier) reel that saltist is going to have him as a starter!
4) Why does he need wind-on's??
5) And he does not need to learn how to slide!
6) R12 hooks? Not needed!! Fish bandit 4X heavy duty! Stronger than he'll need!!
7) Baits expensive? No! Sards and choka is fairly cheap makkies and mullet sometimes also but THE best cheap shark bait= yellow tail heads!!!(If you don't shop like a moegoe and start shopping like a housewife) i get them from a shop near me for R3 each R3!!!!

Bud don't be scared to go up to a guys that are fishing and talk to them about what they do you learn A LOT!!! As i said before join a club! Most of the time THEY are WAAAAAAYYYYYY more excited about you joining the club(even if you just go fish with them socially) than you are!

Your current setup is fine for learning because 10 to 1 you are not going to hook let alone land something above 10-20kgs in the next 2-3 months if you are lucky! And then you ARE going to out grow your current setup VERY quickly 2-3 months of lekker learning and then you want something bigger and better! I suggest a shimano Xage 1468 and a shimano tld star 20/40 loaded with .55 and NO braid! With that reel you'll be abel to PULL sharks for a LONG TIME!

Well said johno. Shark fishing is as expensive as u make it.

If I didn't have the cash I'd get the exact setup suggested.

I'm not sure how prolific they are in your area, but you can easily target smooth hounds and spotted gullies on a light setup with inexpensive tackle. No steel needed, no giant hooks, no sliding etc. And these sharks are awesome fighters for their size and are huge fun on light tackle. If anything its a good way to learn how to play a fish and take your time, before tackling the big guys. Throw a mullet head/flap bait, or a nice piece of chokka in the right spot and you should have a good chance. May even pick up a cobbie instead which is not something to complain about .
