Hi guys

WOW those Riffiel guns look amazing!!  It sound as if I can't go wrong on any of the 3... Tink I'll go for the freediver railgun. It sounds as if the are great value!  Tanx for all the info  My dad has a Champion gun and I have been very keen to try it out (read a lot of good thing about it and it sounds as if they were great. but it's almost 20 years old so don't think I realy trust it)

Hi Divan

I haven't dived Orange Rocks, but have dived numerous spots along the south coast. I would suggest 1 thing though... wherever you intend diving - dive with a buddy. The worst thing is if you experience any difficulty & no one is there to help you.

I can't stress this enough. I have lost a few friends in the past due to their 'bravery'. So please, use the buddy system. :)

Hi stinker

That also worries me very much!!!! But lucky for me my dad is still diving fit (A buddy whenever I need one)

Its true, Spearfishing is for sure not the savest sport!  But there is nothing more AMAZING!!!!! When I am looking at the waves ready to go in, I get so exited!!!::S::S::S::S  What happened to your friends??? sorry to hear about this

I've had 1 pass away in a pool while practicing breath hold. Another, speared a GT - buoy rope tangled in his weight belt - GT swam into a wreck & he was slammed into the side. Didn't have time to cut the rope. Most recently, a guy i used to dive with decided to go by himself, had an asma attack/fit and drowned.

Spearfishing can be rewarding at times. For me he best part is the diversity of undersea life, peacefulness etc.

Hi Divan,

I live in Margate and know the areas quite well although I mostly dive off boats. Both St Mikes and Orange Rocks are good areas especially in winter for Garrick.

Just a word of caution for Ornage Rocks, be sure where you swim in and out as those gullies can get dangerous with tidal movement and differing conditions.

Other good spots are Lucien Point and Margate Pier although less now that the fisherman can use the Pier again. Just watch out, some fisherman can be nasty and try hook you up. That said, if there are guys fishing somewhere, don't go swimming where they're fishing.

The safest spots are St Mikes, Lucien and Margate as you have ample beach to swim out and don't have to worry about rocks. Southbroom Point is also a good safe area with very good fish.

As for guns, a 1.2m is perfect and think it is more your technique in loading rather than strength.

Hi Corry

Tanx for the info! I was in Southbroom about a month ago...   I thought there might be some nice fish around the granny pool area. But went in and zero viz.  :(

Think next time I'll try out some of those spots.  But not orange rocks!!!

Doing shoredives at those spots  whats best, reel or float???????

Reel is more versatile, I use both. When I find a good spot I tie my floatline to the reef and dive using my reel gun. Very nice when current is winding. If I'm diving a deeper spot I tie the floatline so I can hold my float and relax completely while diving right above the hotspot/cave etc.

Hi guys

I saw a Pelaj vennom for R850 and a Freedivers protege for R800.  I realy like the Pelaj, it also has a lifetime warrenty on the handel.  I know Freedivers gear is worth every cent but how about the Pelaj guns???? How are they????

Hi Divan.

I am affraid I don't know the Palaj, can only offer advice on what I do know, for a big banger, any of the rail guns are really feel good guns to shoot, I use a 1300 RA. For shore diving I use a Sporosub Viper 30 which has a 115 barrel, for lightness and balance in the water, it can't be beaten, no wrist strain and quiet as it has a plastic coating on the barrel and is still a rail gun. Things like the muzzle for ease of rubber change need to be changed and can be done at any of the shops, Freedivers, RA etc. Not even sure if one can still get them in this country, used to be brought in by Divetech (Oceandivers). Had mine for 17 years and still going strong.

There's nothing wrong with the Pelaj, they use a really nice rubber (the yellow one - the orange one on the entry level gun isn't great)  but the rail on the barrel is a bit shallow. I have never use one and like I said the best is to get hold of some people and try out there guns for comfort of handle... There will definitely be something that you prefer...whether it's a big or small handle, angle of the handle, type of rubbers (a lot of guys prefer the RA rubbers), and so on...
like I've mentioned I started out with an old Champion gun (35 years old which I fixed up) which has probably shot more fish than all my other guns combined but I've recently converted to Freedivers and have yet to have an issue...
all the brands are good, you need to see what you prefer and what you like... happy hunting

Hi guys

Where can I get freedivers guns up here in Pta?

And if I can't get any up here,  where is the best place to buy them? (price)

Is Eckart the best man to talk to?

Just give Freedivers a call in Durban, they are very helpful and they will tell you who are their bigest distributors near you with the greatest selection or they can customise for you and overnight it for a reasonable rate.

Hey Spearlover,

I have a 1m protoge... It is perfect for what we hunt. I have found that it is light &  accurate (depending on how I am performing he he) The handle is comfortable & is easy to reload! It is perfect for what we hunt in the Cape waters. The Safety is easily accessable

If I were to go hunting large fish, I'd go for the Evo, but the step up is noticable. Stronger/heavier spear. Larger rubber to name a few.

Good luck & Happy Hunting!
Cheers,
L

Hi guys

Any of you guys know of any reefs around Southbroom point that can be reached on a shore dive?? (5m-15m deep,  no deeper than 250m from shore)  Or should I just shoot around that pointy rocks??
