help me please

Hi guys. I have just fallen in love with fishing. now i can't think of anything else.
i want to catch big carp. i need to know a few things... well actually a lot of things. My last trip to the Vaal ower I used mielies and floaties. caught a monster barbel (for my standards). But no Carp. I hope someone can help me. here goes:

1. What bait should i use.

2. should i use a rig?

3. what rig?

4. how do i attach the rig to my line?

5. can i catch carp with mielies?

6. can i use artifical lures?


what should i do and where in Joburg should i go to catch my first big carp?

please help me guys!

Welcome to sealine bud.

As a beginner, I think you should start with conventional angling a.k.a pap swaai! Specimen angling is fishing for bigger carp but its much more complicated. But dont get me wrong, you can catch big fish with conventional angling aswell.

Yes you have to use a rig, here are a couple of rigs you can use. Just go to any tackleshop and buy them in packets. Much less effort.

As for tying it, here's a site with dozens of knots. I recommend the clinch knot!

Mielies is one of the oldest and most trusty baits to use for carp angling but there is much more baits that will catch them! From pap to floaties to gummies, mallows etc... just check at the local tackleshop and buy what you like! Include a packet of plain floaties and always take a can of KOO mielies when you go fishing. As for the pap or dough or whatever, here's a link for a couple of recipes.

Yes you can catch carp on art lure but thats a whole different type of fishing and you must ask Ryan or some of the artlure pros for more info. Check the artlure section.

Hey No Vice, that's a pretty comprehensive answer  there by Kingfisher, i must agree with him about starting out the more conventional way in carp fishing. starting out with conventional baits like dough and sweetcorn is a great way to build confidence and learn the basics of carp fishing. that will build a nice foundation of knowledge for you to move on to the more complicated facets of the sport and, provided you keep going, you will definitely catch a few decent fish along the way.

it probably seems very confusing and a lot to learn right now, but just keep going and read up as much as you can (sealine is a good place to start) and trust me, you'll feel like a pro in no time!

Here is where I thought was in Joburg but turned out to be in Benoni lol. Im sure its not too far from you. Here you dont catch ALOT of fish but at least if you catch a carp its normally a sizer. But I recommend you get a canoe to take your lines deep unless you can cast realy far coz the fish seem to bite better in the deeper water.

If you want to catch ALOT of fish and your willing to travel then by all means go to Bloemhof Dam!
