I am looking to upgrade my old X51 Lowrance with the new generation HDS-5X Sonar.

My question is: there is a choise of 2 different transdusers, a 83/200kHz or 50/200kHz. I do inshore and off-shore fishing, witch one will suite me best? I read 83 for shallow water and 50 for deep water but what unit will serve both applications best?

Help please.

hi fishton

have you got a genral setup for the hd fish finder in regars to ping speed scroll spead and the like my hd 7 seems to loose the bottom and the screen goes black for game fishing.

is there any truth that your transducer should be mounted on the out side of your tunnel as the tunnel on a cat cause to much interferance

Send me a photo of your transducer setup, and yes, you do get a lot of turbulence from the tunnel.

What are your current settings and transducer being used?

got the standard skimmer that it came with going to take a photo this weekend not sure what the settings are now as we played around with them a bit to try sort it out.

Next to correct placement and basic settings, replacing the standard skimmer with the Airmar P66 is definitely the best thing you could ever do for a HDS.

No problem JFE, thanks.

This was the very first review that I did, a 'First Impressions' as it were.

Since then I have spent a lot of time using the P66 in many different situations and have found it to be far superior to the standard skimmer.

The biggest difference is that it is a true dual frequency transducer, not just a filtered single frequency.

Rory,
You have a Z-Craft. The keel strips on the Z is to the outside of the sponson. Therefore with a Z, the transducer will work best to the inside of the left sponson. The ultimate would be to fit an in hull unit. Z-Craft normally fit them inside the luna tube well. A box needs to be made to accommodate it though.
