Has you all probably know by now, I live in Luanda

Has you all probably know by now, I live in Luanda, Angola a country with an enormous fishing potential, great biodiversity, long shoreline, etc. etc.

One of the biggest problems I find in Angola (fishingwize) is the almost total inexistance of sport fishing infrastructure, apart from Luanda, Lobito, Longa Lodge, Flamingo Lodge and Kwanza Lodge on the rest of the 1650 Km of shoreline you probably won't find a decent "sport fishing" boat that can take you 5 miles out into the sea.

Allthough a lot of investment is being made on roads, a big pice of the shoreline must still be driven on dirt roads what makes it very difficult to tow a boat to any given destination, or at least make the trip a very, very slow one and instead of fishing you will spend your time driving :-( .

On the other hand on most of fishing locations (towns) you will find little boats like this Yamaha, running usually a yamaha two stroke outboard.

Yamahasboat.jpg

Usually if you bring 2 stroke oil and gasoline with you, you can negotiate with local fisherman and "rent" it for a couple of hours in the sea.

I've also have an "extra" 25 Hp Mercury 4 stroke outboard that I can take with me for safety reasons.

My idea is to get some kind of portable fishfinder that allows me to explore this remote locations on little yamaha boats like the one above.

I cannot imagine jigging without a good fishfinder that can show you structure and fish off the bottom.

I've been searching the internet and found this Humminbird portable fishfinders:

385CIportable.jpg

They use Gel batterys that can be easely recharged

GelCellBattery.jpg

And I found this portable transducers (with suction cups)

portabletransducer.jpg

I need to be able to sound structure up to 200 meters deep.

Have you guys used any of this solutions ? How do they work ? What other kind/brand can you find?

Thanks.

Fedu,

I dont think that that portable fishfinder is going to help you beyond 60-80m; i would seriously look at getting a Lowrance LCX 15 Ci or MT or other cheaper fairly high powered finder with either the standard skimmer transducer or the AIRMAR p-66 transducer with the blue lowrance plug from http://www.blueheronmarine.com $122 for the ducer.

The new Lowrance HDS-5 (currently on special at Bass-pro for $649.00) or 7 would be perfect as it has an internal antennae.

Also purchase a Ram mount; they have many to choose from - the 3 suction cup base would be a good one for that Yamaha boat seats. www.ram-mount.com

You can see the FF mounted on the bimini and i also mounted the antennae for the gps with a suction cup.

You can run the lowrance LCX 15mt for about 8 hours on a 12.5 amp-hour motor bike battery and i used to take 2 battries with me for a day. I have modified my main power leads with crocodile clips that i just clamp onto the boat battery if it has one.

I am watching you watching me on the fishfinder!

I even took my LCX 15MT to Indonesia on a surf trip; just purchased a motor bike battery there; you can see the finder perched in my bag on the seat.

Will post pic of transducer tomorrow.

Take plenty of cable ties to neaten up cabling and be sure to tie a safety to your transducer just in case it does come off at speed and damage the ducer cable connection.

Blaa,

Thanks again, will wait for the transducer solution pictures.

You say I need something like the Lowrance that has:

Sonar Output Power Max 8000 W
Sonar Depth Max 9800 ft 3000 m

and at the same time with lowest power consumption.

The Gel Battery / charger solution will work there also.

Your Airmar P66 transducer is 600W rated, that might mean that a 600W analog fishfinder should be the minimum I should look for.
The one I had on the picture, Humminbird 385, is only 300W!!

The pro staff at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas in the USA will definitely guide you in the right direction. :sa:

Cut the double suction cuo handle in half so that you have 2 cups, then cut the handle in half so that you have a semi-circle and two flat surfaces to attach the bracket. I used some latapoxy 310 epoxy and cable ties to secure the bracket on the P-66 and it is 100% firm. You need to take a file and rough up all the contact surfaces to ensure a good bond.

Washington DC, no BPS or Cabelas there, unfortunetly.
But I'll try to find a store nearby so she doesn't become upset.

Wait, I could also have them sent to Houston and back in Angola by January, that way Bass Pro shop may be a possibility

They generally ship anywhere in the US in less than 24hrs and some times no cost if over US$100 or something like that.

P.S Don't skimp on your sonar - buy the absolute best your platinum card will allow ;)
You won't regret it.

Ok, Fishton.

I don't know if I understood it correctly, but what you are saying is that:

I Should not buy from you and get it in the States.

thanks a lot.

P.S. - Would never buy from the States if humminbird, no metric system, no African Time Zone, etc.

It gets a bit frustrating when you spend a couple of hours with a guy and he finishes off with ............ "Thanks for the help, but I'll get it on line from the States."

The unit you are looking for is the Humminbird 798cxSI, it is the ultimate all rounder with high definition screen, high power, side imaging, 83/200/455kHz, FishId+, TrueArch technology, QuadraBeamPlus, 50 channel GPS receiver with a 4hz refresh rate with satellites, not to mention the most amazing DownImaging FREE software update coming in Jan 2010.  And an amazing on-board waypoint manager coming in the same upgrade.

The price is just as good - see PM.

Fishton,

I am super stoked with my Airmar P-66; you are going to laugh; when i recieved it i hooked it up in my pool along side my skimmer transducer and swam under both to see if there was any difference - well the P-66 pulses were actually quite painful!

The diference is like night and day and i would reccomend the additional $122 to anyone who is fishing depths more than 100m and are not satisfied with the current performance of their unit. The performance at speed is also incredible.

If you have a larger boat you can always move up to the TM260 which aparently is 25 times more sensitive than a standard transducer and puts out 1 kw of power. I read this article on this organization that was mapping the ocean floor in the Bahamas and they were using a simple Lowrance LCX 15MT with a TM260 for mapping grade information. The TM 260 is abour $700 so its not cheap and weighs about 4kgs so its only for the larger boats.

I understood your concern.

One of my ideas is just that with a little twist.

a) Change my existing 787CxSI to "portable" unit, buy a new 798CxSI to install on the boat (had asked before for a quote from you has you know).
b) See the Blaasoppie suction cup transducer solution (for the 787).
c) Buy the Humminbird Gel battery / Charger (for the 787)
d) Get some kind of solution (Ram mount?) that allows me to change the 787 to portable

My main doubt now is power comsuption of the 787 versus Gel Battery capacity.

3 advantages in this solution
1) would Have my fixed boat Fishfinder upgraded
2) Can still use my existing SD West Africa map chart on both FFs
3) Easier learning curve on operating the device

thanks again

P.S. - Don't ask me why but, I've also got a Garmin 4008 with GSD 22 on my boat, I don't like the sounder, probably geting an Airmar transducer there would also improve the Garmin performance.

Most 4 strokes have a 12V min 6A output nowadays, so just get the cable connector and plug it into a standard 12Ah 12V sealed battery available from any battery dealer - or me.  It should last you the day at least without a charge anyway.

fedu

Can you also get the Airmar transducer for the Garmin GSD22 ?

Good news with a 10A Battery the 787 will work for about 12 Hours.
The 787 will also fit the Humminbird Portable Bag.
