Has anybody travelled the road to Jozini lately. I did so over the weekend "hair raising" with all the road works between Piet Retief and Pongola.  Those attending the Tiger fish comp be aware leave enough time for travelling that part of the road.

no, wish i had gone fishing, have my own business and had to move client from JHB to Richards Bay. Was going to take part in fishing comp at Josini, but have decided against it due to the road works.

Go through Swaziland. It took a friend of mine 1 hour and 40 minutes from Piet Retief to Gollele. I don't know how fast he went but he said that he had no problems.

Hi all

Has anyone taken the Standerton/ Lunesburg road or Candover roads ...is it possible. otherwise i will make use of your suggestion Swaziland.. do you need all the paper work eg bank letter if car is on HP..ECT road tax

I lived in the Magudu district and used the Candover on many occasions but I would not tow a boat over the Candover road. We often pulled a 15.6 Trimcraft but it was not worth the effort. I would not suggest the Candover road.

We normally go Standerton, Volksrust, Utrecht, Vryheid and then Pongola. There are road works between Volksrust and Utrecht in the Amajuba pass at the moment. It is only 1 stop go which I have never waited more than 10 mins.

We do this often as folks stay in Vryheid.

Hi there agree the Standerton,Volksrust,Utrecht,Vryheid,Pongola is by far the better option ,Will be leaving for  the Bonanza comp. on wednesday morning at 1oclock from Sasolburg

See you have caught some monsters..8.7 kg tiger anyones dream. Wonder what Pongola record for tiger is? We might see each other along the road ..This will be the first time i entered for any competition..use to fish of the beaten track..mainly Chobe kasia channel, zambezi, doing Shire river Malawi Desember..how do these competions actualy work..

Tiger wakka you are in for an eye opener. Comp is great fun but fish tend to go off the bite during the comp due to all the boat activity.

Last year we went to Pongola the day after the comp..stayed a week.amongst 11 guys we caught 2... one 2.1kgs and 2.6 kg on sards..when we arrived we nearly cried..dustbins full of tigers between 3-4 kg wasted. My buddies nearly sank their 18 foot Panache with 200 v6 jammie..Me I dont go deep water after i nearly sank Tiger wakka returning from Sengwe river Kariba in 1990. got a nickname in zim..the crew of the yellow submarine..to me 6 months to redo Tiger Wakka last year after it stood for 13 years. Like i say im a novice in comp fishing..just a suggestion cant we work on a sms system to log our catch the organiser can then let u know if u are between the first 15 if not release your fish..guess i will learn..

TW The organisers are very aware of this problem. They have a cell number that you can call and ask if your fish is in the top 15 or not, they also give an update for the next day saying please no fish under x kg. Last year they had great prize for CAR and a lot of guys go out of the way to only CAR. A lot of fish are in the top 15 but as the days go by get taken out and then end up in the trash can I would guess. I still think the first prize (The boat) should go 2 biggest CAR fish. Thats my 2c

Tiger wakka. It will also be my first Tiger Bonanza although i have fished a number of other comp mainly in Zim .Your exact reason why i  have  had my new boat built still sorting it out .Iwill be staying at the Mvubu Lodge ,if you need some small kurpers i may be able to help you.

That is great news..we are great supporters of CAR..at least we leave some for grand children one day. Im even prepared to pay much more per entry and then have one major prize for CAR ..MAIN PRIZE.. Maybe a smaller boat :kaykak for non CAR.

I think us rookies at the Bonansa  are the danger men:wfish..I booked at the game reserve stand no 19 right next to Tony,s fishing camp.It is close to the water. where are you going to launch?I will take you up on you offer thank you....I also have some work on boat canopy..luckily just some spraywork..would like to see pic of you new boat..congrats..usualy = maiden voyage=winning fish

Vleisvreter your friend pull a boat? What vehicle did he drive. I think that this is an option.

Hi there my fiancee and myself went down to Sodwana for the holiday, we too went via Swaziland, entering at Mahamba and leaving at Golela Border posts, the road was in a good condition and there was hardly any trafic either specially large trucks and anoying taxis, the areas around and near the villages of DWALENI, MHLOSHENI and HLUTI had some pedestrian trafic alongside the road especialy during school breaks, it took us under a hour and a half to get to Golela from Mahamba and we would have been through in a flash there, if it was not for a Putco Bus that stopped 10 minutes before discharching a large group of people who were going through customs into SA.
The return trip was a matter of in and out of Swazi in a hour and a half, totaly worth the 50 eLangeni road tax (R50) one has to pay. Keep the receipt for when a trafic officer stops you (not likely)otherwise you have to go through a longer system to obtain the roadtax certificate aka a fine
The road is in a beter condition than most SA roads and not 1 pothole was encountered from the Nhlangano turnoff to Golela
It would be a breeze dragging a boat across this section of road even with a 4x2 vehicle. The uphils are moderate and there is only one section with a steepish uphill that would require gearing down to a lower gear ratio.

This is definitly the way to go until the Piet Retief Pongola Roads have been completed
