Handheld GPS on a budget

I have never used a GPS, and would like to buy a handheld device on a budget. Any advice on a unit which would suit a family which fishes deep sea maybe 4/5 times a year would be appreciated. Dont really want to spend more than about R1500.

PM me, I got a brand new Lowrance iFinder GO 2 Intl for R1500.

Just to add, I had an Etrax... for a week. hated it,battery life is also rubbish! For that money, don't expect a base map. Then again on those budget units you cant see the map anyway.

I had the Lowrance on my old boat - very good for the price, screen a bit small, battery life is best in class.
The etrex has side buttons which are crap, battery life is also crap - the middle range Garmins are very good but R2200 +.
I will definately get another for new boat when I get some spare tin.

This is one of the many things i love about SEALINE! One can learn alot from other`s personal experiences!

It seems that the Lowrance is the one then?

Etrex is ok, great as a back up, but the battery life is a pain in the 2ss. Also the side buttons as mentioned. I havnt used the lowrance, but most of their products are good. They also usually very user friendly. For the budget prices, dont expect the maps to be up to much. The decent maps for the bigger machines cost a lot more than the units you looking at. You dont get Merc features for Citi golf prices, but they both get you from a-b.

For me best handheld GPS sofar is the Garmin 72. Big screen, easy to operate and never led me down in more than 5 years. I think they are around R1900 - R2000 at the moment.
