Fishing last weekend was pretty tough, even though the weather was great, temps been picking up quite a bit, which made me wonder if some havent already started?

I think the water temps are still low. It has only been warm, for about a week...

The water will gradually get warmer and cause fish to become more active. Just because the air temp is lekker doesn't mean the water is.

It will take time for the water to warm absolutely, it was just a thought. Im not sure where you've been for the last 3 weeks, coz after that cold snap temps have been picking up gradually, fishy guy....

Carp Spawning:

Changes in water temperature have an affect on carp’s spawning habits. Carp spawn in the spring and early summer when the water temperature is around 16-26 °C. It may take place over several days. If food is scarce, fish will progressively spawn, i.e., a few eggs at a time. In tropical regions, Carp may spawn more than once. The individual spawns usually one time, but the population may spawn over the entire season. The embryonic development of carp takes about 3 days at 20-23 °C. If hatching comes too close to winter the young carp fry do not have enough time to build up reserves of fat before winter sets in and they perish. Growth is rapid where the water is warm and rich in food. Carp can reach 0.9kg and 15cm in length in a year. They continue to grow at that rate, but not in waters that are too cold (below 10 °C) to encourage maximum size. The ideal temperature for maximum growth is 20-28 °C.

Timing of Reproduction
The development of carp eggs and sperm are directly affected by water temperature, the availability of food, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water, and the increasing length of daylight. The eggs ripen when the female carp’s pituitary gland stimulates the release of gonadotropin hormones.

In temperate zones, carp become sexually mature in two years and spawn in the spring. In tropical regions, they may spawn more than once. Carp spawn usually one time, but the population may spawn over the entire season. If food is scarce, fish will progressively spawn a few eggs at a time.

Sexually mature carp have different features. In females, the ovaries are large and plump out the stomach. The males testes are smaller, allowing the males to retain a sleek torpedo-like shape. When males are ready for spawning, they develop breeding nodules on the head and pectoral fins, principally along the bones of the fin rays. These appear as fine whitish raised spots. The nodules appear in abundance on the pectoral fins in regular rows and are rough to the touch. During breeding, the male nudges the female with his head and fins to encourage spawning

Where do Carp Spawn?
Carp spawn in the spring and early summer in weedy, grassy, shallow areas of lakes and watercourses, usually about 2-3 feet deep. They prefer to spawn when the level of water is rising. Flood conditions usually trigger furious activity as carp wallow and splash, making a noise that can be heard for some distance. All this splashing and physical activity is designed to spread the adhesive eggs.

What do Spawning Carp Eat?
Spawning carp are usually not interested in eating, but post spawn carp are. Pre- and post- spawning carp can be found in the rolling waters where the spawning happens. Anglers should look for post-spawn carp for the best fishing during this period of the carp’s life.

Do They Eat Their Own Eggs?
Many carp populations appear to be self-regulating. Adult fish in dense, highly competitive populations eat their own eggs and larvae. When adult numbers decline, the survival of young carp is greatly enhanced and a strong new generation emerges.

My observation showed that they usaually start spawning after the first rains in September.

Not because of the rains (Western Cape has winter rainfalls) but because the rains brings in 'new' food to the dams that the Carps need to start spawning. But the first rainfall in Gauteng and Freestate is a good measure to go by.

It's more because the water tempis around 16-18 degrees when the traditional first rains occur

The fish don't need food during the spawn, they bulk up pre-winter for the spawn.

They won't spawn in water sub 16 degrees as there is not enough plankton and algae to support the hatched fry in suck cold water.

Bass will spawn earlier so that they are big enough to catch later spawning fish's fry.

We had some good rain a week or 2 back. Carp still not spawning. Then it surely not related to rain. Craig must be correct then. In fairness - he is more experienced than all of us together.

Every sport has it own discipline. The difference between conventional and specimen angling is not only based on the size of the fish......:fbash

BTW a carp of 2 years of age is mature and capable to reproduce....

Should you not be hijacking the specimen posts....
