Will,

Not radar, but look at this Finder/GPS/plotter combo:

Seems like very good value to me

Furuno suggests a retail price of USD 2145.00, so this is offered really cheap!

Just got all those electronics by scrounging on the 2nd hand market so always keep your ears on the ground. I'm looking at the Furuno 16 mile from killerdeals - best price so far. just bought the Garmin G2 Vision maps from them this morning and it's already on it's way to me so I can reccommend their service. I got a Furuno FCV600 finder and a GPSMap420 R5k for both - and the Garmin was still in the box. Thanks to Sealine and Bernie (BCD63)

Will, call SEAPORT supplies in Paarden Island. They normally sell the 16nm Radar unit for R12K. I bought my previous 16nm radar from them, when it was on special for R10.5K.......

That is a very good deal!! the best I can do the Furuno 1623 is R13 995 including vat. Seaport is the best deal at the moment, that price is under my cost :X

The reason I'm asking is, that if you compair the price of a plotter to basic radar with all the pro's and cons of each, than it make more sens to me to invest in a radar and basic GPS than buying a plotter. if you know how to use a radar and how to read it correct, i think it is a better and more reliable navigation aid than a plotter. The usa donot control the radar.

Vasbyt, there is a HUGE difference between a radar and a plotter. The radar is used primarily as a collision avoidance tool. The plotter is used as a navigational aid.

Lets assume you launch from Ysterfontein and run to Dassen Island. The fog rolls in and you now have to get back in. You've spent the day fishing behind the island, so you will need to navigate your way back around the island. Your radar will pick up the island and any other boats, but it will NOT pick up reefs that are laying just below the surface. It will also not tell you WHERE you are or WHICH direction the harbour is. Your PLOTTER will show you all the shallow area's, where the harbour is and any other valuable information.

A plotter can be bought for as little a R5000, as opposed to R12000+ for a radar.

Your radar also needs to be mounted very high on the boat. The reason for this is that the higher up your radar is, the further it can 'see'. You will also want to mount it higher than a standing person, as the radiation emitted from the radar is detrimental to your health. So, as long as you are not in the radar beams "path", you're ok.

For a novice boater or somebody who is new to the area, a PLOTTER is one of the best investments he/she can make. It shows you where many popular fish spots are, harbours, danger zones, etc. Its almost like having your own personal guide to the area!! Well worth the investment.

Thika,
Just as a matter of interest:
The formula for calculating distances at sea:

1.92 sqrt (h) sea miles (Geometric horizon)
2.12 sqrt (h) sea miles (Optical horizon)
2.23 sqrt (h) sea miles (Radar horizon)
where h is the height of the of eye/aerial in metres.

To calculate the Radar range to an object:
2.23 [sqrt (h) + sqrt (H)] in sea miles
where H is the height of the object.

Sorry for the math, but it's what I do.
Remember, it doesn't matter what quality Radar you put up, the higher the transmitter, the more motion it will experience and the poorer picture you will get.
Small targets will be a case of now-you-see-me-now-you-don't.
Hope it helps

:D:D
