Grunting

Hi guys....after reading the topic "struggling with dropshot" i've suddenly remembered my own personal struggle with grunters in the bay....to me it seems tht these grunters are immune to soft plastics ,i've tried many a time many a retrieve but to no avail.......any1 out there who has caught grunter on worms or prawn imitations or minnows ,care to shed some light on the EXACT retrieval tht worked constantly and whether or not its more viable to target them during the day for visibility purposes or can they be targeted at night as wel with soft plastics?
Thanks guys

They have to be one of the toughest fish to catch on fly and I am sure the same would apply to plastics.

Get your plastics to look, feel, smell and walk like a mud prawn!

They are (sometimes) caught on minnows, but your best bet would be worms, squids and so forth, the stuff they actually eat.

REAL baits they prefer include Mud Prawn, Sand Prawn, Swimming Prawn, Blood Worm and Tape Worm and the bigger ones are also taken on Pilchards.

You scare them and they are gone !

If you go artificial I still say the lightest possible jighead you can find or just go driftbait with your artificial.

Grunters generally take their time to eat, it looks like they first INSPECT, then lick, then nibble, then tickle and then only take the bait.

Circle hooks should work great with grunters as they normally swallow your hook without you even knowing it.

Do a operation on your worm, put it around a smallish circle hook, a little ghostcotton and let that baby drift onto a bank where the tigers are blowing prawns.

A GREAT FIGHTING FISH for it's size, and unfortunately they also taste BLOODY NICE. If you keep for the pan, limit your take pls, they are under pressure from overfishing by RECREATIONAL anglers.

If you want to be successful in catching them you need to speak to the local anglers (the ones that keep everything they catch unfortunately) to find out where and when to go looking for them.

Targetting Grunter with Lures is an ART. And painting a masterpiece will be VERY DIFFICULT.

Hi Ocean_darku

I don't know about plastic-lures, but I went a few months ago to Amatikulu Reserve & we fished for spotted Grunter for the both nights at the lagoon!! Was scary as there are crocoiles that lurk around, lol.
Anyway, we used bait (Can't remember which, Sardine maybe), cut it into nice pieces & put it on a hook & cast out. As these are very, very shy fish, we had to wait a while before they would take the big bite.
& yes, these are very tasty fish, in fact, the most delicious fish ever! (Next to Salmon & maybe Trout)
Basically, You just got6ta have patience with these fish & they need time before they trust your bait!

If you can take two rods, drift the one and twitch the other very very very slowly, and if you think you going slow then pls go a little slower.

I would suggest casting the twitch bait out, let it drift onto the bank (with the tide) and once on there start working it back slowly.

Let us know how it went

K i've just went out and bought myself a pack of 1/16th O.z jigs ...i'll carry two outfits as u suggest neil ,the one with a worm and the other with a berkley craw(by far the closest imitation i could find for a sand prawn) and i'll twitch the craw from the bank into the deep back to the boat in high hopes of hooking into a decent sized grunter lol ,the worm ..i'd cast it as close to the bank as i can and let it drift around ....here's to hoping for my 25th specie

Howzit OD. I've caught only 1 grunter on a Gulp 3" Pearl Minnow on a 1/8 ounce jighead off a kayak at Vetchies. The wind was easterly and I was casting towards the shore, so the resulting retrieval was pretty slow. I was using a slow double-tap retrieve. Line was 6lb Fireline with a 8lb flourocarbon leader of about 50cm. Luck!
