Hi BM...

I'm new to the site and want to fish Grootdraai this weekend aswell. Never been before either. Actually didn't know it existed till yesterday?

Would appreciate some info too thanks...

I see one of the forum members, "Errant" say's it's his favorite dam...

I will let you know what i find out... Facilities, best catching distance, baits, dips etc...

Cheers

Hi everyone...

Got back from Grootdraai late yesterday afternoon...

Fishing was better than I could of hoped for...

We landed around 30 carp between 3kg and 6kg...

Funny thing was though, nothing under 3kg and nothing over 6kg???

Going for the bigger ones next time...

Hey Guys, havn't been on the forum in a little while so thus no reply lol! How was the level of the dam, it has been very low of late so the bigger fish are in the deeper waters. Which side of the dam did you fish from? I have been trying various bait but its seems the guys bite mainly for Tjop Tjop, Pink Sweets, Cinnamon and Caramel. There are also a decent number of Yellows which love the Mielie Pip. There are a few really good spots to fish at but require some prior grant from the water works to get in there.

We actually had a very bad last visit with only one fish really comming out, was odd so we moved down to the river to test it out and nothing really spectaculer!

There is a lot of water which borders Farms and I feel that to be some serious virgin fishing spots. There must be some monsters in this dam as I only see averages 6kg and below comming out on a regular basis. There is a better spot than the dam, Two Drunk River lol and there you can get some serious carp :) Still investigating the place but I recon it should hold some great rewards.

Hi Errant, Wave and BM...

Sorry for the late reply...

Wave, the dam is outside Standerton, +- 25km... Municipal fishing area...

BM, I fished some private farmlands to the north of the dam... Will reply to your pm later... (Virgin fishing grounds)

Errant, the dam is quite low, +- 15m back from the watermark. We fished about 100m out at a depth of arround 6m. Made a "voermaakplek" on Friday afternoon and by Saturday morning it was working well. Had 2 rods with hair rigs and boilies (Banjo, fishmeal) and 2 rods with floaties and dough backing. Your choice of dips mentioned above was about right + "Red Has Been"...

Never thought fishing was such hard work! Caught the majority of the fish on Saturday. After lunch decided to take out 3 rods and just fished with one boilie rod...

I took lines out with the Kyak most of the time.

Made one mistake though, never continued to "feed the voermaakplek", so by Saturday night things started slowing down a bit!

Nevertheless, most enjoyable, lots of fish, and will go back soon to try land some bigger ones in deeper water...

It's the first time out for me using boilies... If I use a bigger boilie will I stand a chance of catching a bigger carp? Biggest one landed on boilie was touching 6kg...(Everyone always says you can catch a big fish on small bait but you cant catch a small fish on big bait)????

Anyways, it was great!!!
