The SE was blowing really hard for the next two days so we never went out, but on the 15[sup]th[/sup] left the lodge late afternoon for some sunset drinks at Benguerra´s north point.
As we casually sipping our wine we see some chases right on the beach about 50 meters away. Jump, grab light spinning rod and run…as I get there this small GT´s are actually chasing small maasbanker´s right on to the beach…the bait is actually trying to escape and jumping on to the sand.
Pick a live one, hooked it on the spoon, cast and we ON
!!!
I pass the rod to young Billy who after a 25 minute tussle brings in a nice 6 kg GT on 12 pound line...awesome catch on that ultra light rod, unfortunetl the fish took us way down the beach and could not get a photo!!!
As we make our way home at sunset we put some rappies and catch another small kingy!

We finally get out there yesterday, strangely enough after the big SE it is now blowing quiet hard from the NE. But the water is looking great and soon after lines in at VI mile we hookup on the SR Enki and Richard McGee brings in a nice sailfish…his first ever billfish!!!

Not twenty minutes later and just a bit further north we get a strike on one of the short halco´s on the bait sticks and the fish just keeps running and running.
I eventually have to turn the boat and chase as we short on line when a 100 pound Marlin jumps far astern.
A small perfect size fish for the light tackle and Richard Brake as great fun...

We carry on north and at lighthouse get a bonnie on the bait sticks, as I slow the boat the SG piper lure goes, gun the boat and we hook up.
Alex saw some commotion on the take & tells me it might be a Marlin, but after 30 minutes we get it to the boat and it turns out to be a shark which we promptly release.

We spend the next hour and a half spinning on light tackle but only get three nice bludger kingfish so at 11h00 it’s back to business and we set the lures. The wind is now howling from the NE so we decide to make our way back south with the wind.
11h20 I notice some commotion on the SC Black Zulu Impy and right then a Marlin bill materializes behind it and BANG, we ON!!!
Richard MacGee jumps on the chair and after releasing his first sailfish early in the morning, he is now on to his first Marlin.

Beautiful flat day today and quite a bit of action mid morning seeing us pick a couple of wahoo, some YF and bonnies. Put two live baits but both taken by sharks within 20 minutes. Jigged for an half hour in 50 meters off lighthouse…I picked a fairly light rod and within my second time down hook up on a jig but got busted. Change to a big drop shoot and again second time down, hookup, this time could hold it for a couple of minutes but eventually got reefed again!
Started to make our way back south at 11 and deep off VI mile get a good 400 lbs Marlin take a swipe at the LC Bonito Smoker that failed to connect and shortly after made our way home.

Hi Sealiners,
just a quick one to wish you all a great 2010 and tight lines for the year ahead.
Been travelling quiet a bit since finishing the season at Bazaruto...spent the new year over in St. Francis (some nice grunter fishing there) and have had some great fishing since being back in Maputo over the last week or so.
As with last year, late December and January as seen unusual good numbers of Marlin in these waters with a few fish (mostly in the 200 to 350 pound Blacks) being released, with the biggest estimated at 600 lbs.
We have also had some amazing vertical jigging...I mean non stop action days were arms are stretched to the limit for hours on end with some mean kingfish, were despite catching fish in excess of 35 kilos one looses 20+ jigs to much bigger fish that simply can´t be stopped before reefing you...
