It's not been an easy choice, the Lowrance Elite looked the deal, untill I bought my new boat, it came with a Garmin 160C and a Furuno LE400, so that's not a bad bit of kit, I finally settled on the Garmin GPSMAP 421 with their G2 & waterways map cards, I looked seriously at the other options but what swayed me was the G2 map and the fishfinder each with 'full size' screens rather than having to use a split screen for both functions, purchase has been made so have to live with it, I'm sure it will be fine.

Garmin say they have the Knysna to Beira reefs plotted, much is much like Lowrance. It was not an easy choice,between Lowrance & Garmin, as a stand alone unit I would have definitely gone with the Lowrance Elite, no question at all but to optimise what's installed on my boat I had to consider that as well.
Whats installed on my new boat, is a Garmin 160 which is not what you sell but is is a good unit, which when matched with the Garmin GPSMAP 421 makes a lot of sense, to me, there is also a Furuno LE4000 installed on the boat, not sure what thie advantage will be be but.....
With the Garmin 160 & 421 having 2 screens the same size rather than a split screen does it for me, I will get the GPS plotting and the fish finder confirming seabed on equal size screens. Made my choice and will live with it for now.

Thanks John, an interesting article, I've fished the shoal many times caught plenty of tuna, wahoo and couta, I've got hundreds of points for the KZN coast from Scottburgh to Vidalsomething that concerned me when out there were the jetskis and single engined boats outside of their 1NM limit, they put their own and other peoples lives at risk.

Those Garmin G2 charts from well surveyed areas in the USA do look awesome. Not too sure about the local SA reefs though.

All the charts that I own only one beats Garmin and more on precision than on detail itselft, the charts that come with the professional navigation software called "Maxsea".
