Not sure looked big and bloody, probably some shark fillets, I had half a yellowtail out and a whole Blacktail before that.
I think the big difference was that he arrived and slid moments after Wade got burnt off so he slid leaving a 100mtr chum line straight to his bait when the shark was already in the area whereas my bait had been soaking for over an hour and was nothing more than a head by that stage.

not sure what he got it on, but I got my bite on a 30cm live mullet on a far cast, still cant believe after an hour in the water the mullet didn't swim the slide down

ya I was thinking of cutting its tail off but I wanted the mullet to stay alive a lot longer as my shad bait came out striped within 45min from the crabs. next time the tail is going off without hesitation

Or Use shark baits. I got some hammerhead bait that I'm gonna use up, I'm going to kei for the weekend and gonna fish the pond and high rocks, just hope I at least land something.

So you expect that poor little mullet to swim 80mtr with 2 x 12/0 hooks, 1mtr of steel, a slide with a 3/4 weight into 2,5mtr swells while dragging the slide over your line. Then remember that it doesn't know which way you cast so it's swimming left and right as well, then consider that where do you catch mullet? on the edge in the white water where it can hide from the sharks, it knows better than to swim straight out into the deep where the sharks lurk..............

Suddenly it's not that hard to beleive that it didn't swim :fbash

You also make reference to a far cast, well your slide wasn't anywhere near all the way down and you still got the bite so if you had cast 20mtr less and slid it all the way you would have been the one on with a 100kg+ Blacktip.

I'm not being critical I'm actually showing you what a compliment / good peice of advise DV has given "no mess no Fuss" keep it that way but beware of that exhuberance of youth because it can lead to an obsession with casting distance, bait size etc etc etc and we've already had one Duif::S

think about it, why would you turn down a nice big live mullet to slide over a big shark bait, with that live mullet ill be able to catch nearly anything, why target one specific specie when you got an option of a better bait in the water that will target A LOT more fish out there, iv also learnt that big baits are not always better, the fish you can hook on a shad head is remarkable, iv seen it with my own very eyes, maybe a black pylie or duck bill over 100kg comes swimming by, it wont exactly take a shark head, iv heard of a diamond caught with a shark in its mouth which I find surprising. sliding a live bait sends out distress signals which is way better than cent in my opinion, because the smell of fish gets washed around and fades over time, a live baits distress signal will lead that shark straight to it which is why I think I got the 1st bite that day, but I will admit FLUKE I do need to slide for abit longer and put out a shorter cast, I thought with the waves tugging on my line and then letting go of it which bounces my rod would sorta slide my bait down for me, I guess I know better now and iv learned something from it , next time ill get that fish out, but I was mostly disappointed of where It burned me off, I got 95% of my line back, so that mullet was about 15m away from the leader

i can see yoh, its funny how fishing works sometimes, you get the oaks that fishes there alot and they get a bite amongst alot of anglers that are doing the same thing as the oak that fishes there all the time but they catches nothing. its like at gonubie point, iv been putting alot of hours in there lately and yet you can the oak thats fished there for years and they have one throw and hook the biggest baddest fish out there and yet iv got 2 baits in the water and been there a couple of hours before him, but eventully it does atleast pay off^^..

very nice catch...

I fish mainly from the shore line in Durban, so a long cast is required when sliding big baits. When I slide dead or alive bait I never slide for less than 20 minutes. This might sound long but I have lost many a fish been lazy and thinking my bait is all the way down.

It might look stupid but there will be a reward at the end ( excuse the pun)...

that is very long but I guess its one way to make sure its down, I usually slide between 5 and 8 minutes but iv totally forgotten that since iv been sliding iv been casting further and further, so I guess I need to buff it up to 10min+, what really bothers me when sliding is the line chaffs on the tip eye and I hate it, I would put water on the eye but would quickly lose the effect, maybe bring abit of Vaseline with and just rub a smidge on the eye could be a quick solution

let out a couple of cm every now and then and move back a bit or reel in a bit and move a bit forward.

been doing that lately, seems to work better, I find perline doesn't chaff on the tip eye as much, but I think its because its a lot softer than T-line or most lines infact

When sliding I see altie and duif hold there lines verry tight I've also seen their sinkers pull on numerous occasions and their line part at the rod tip. I've never had that problem and in 5yrs only been burned off 4times and 2of those times the sinker stuck and the fish pulled the slide up the line.

Holding tight also takes out the stretch in ur line and slows down ur sliding when under water.

My advise anyway. Big baits also require more sliding as they hang on ur line.

As for cutting the tail off. Just trim it. It really helps allot.
