Good day,
We are planning on going to the Boviaanskloof the long weekend at the end of April.I was doing some research on the web about the place, but there are so many campsites to choose from, we will be entering the reserve from Patensie , looking forward of a day of site seeing and some good old fashion 4x4 challenges. On that short note, can anyone please help me on the best place to camp, (not to neer the entrance, at Patensie) and the best place to fish for bass...

Best camping I would suggest either Rooihoek or Doodsklip, from there you can walk up and down the river and fish. From Doodsklip you can walk downsteam to the dam or upstream towards Rooihoek and fish the rapids and pools.

At Rooihoek you can walk downstream to Doodsklip or Upstream towards Smitskraal, very good fishing and good memories, an awesome place !

Haven't been there for a while but heard that the barbel have ruined things a bit.

Im gonne start preparing my mielibomme, kerrie deeg and soaking my mielies in some dip this week and the next, (This is probably the most old school way of catching carp, haha) i haven't done karp vishing in a long long time, looking forward to fish for that golden menere...

I haven't been there in about 3 years, but last I was there had some very good fishing. Smallies in excess of 1,5 kg, good fun in the rapids, but I beleive the barbel have stuffed things up, much like in the Breede. :(

Please let me know what's the condition of the road to Doodsklip.
Some chaps complain of damaged side walls on their tyres.
I would like to organize a weekend there and do some fresh water. Awesome place!

Hiya Guys,

I took Mrs Trophy through the entire length over the Easter wEekend. Although I did not fish, I had a good look around. Mrs Trophy made all the notes of the various camp site names and she is away on a group.

The river was swollen and dirty after all the Easter rains so it was diff to see the normal water levels and structure of the various spots.

The best camp site we saw, and we only saw those along the main drag, was actually between the Park office and the Entry gates to the park.

The site are on both side of the road in groups of 1-5 sites always on the river bank. Rolling green grass down meters before the rustic river edge with deep pool and eddies. Each campsite had a shower and toilet and a gass fridge. Hot water courtesy of a wood fired 'Donkey' that was between two sites.

This was by far the best camp site and although it was flooding I could see the potential for good fishing? Much further and higher (900m) in the reserve you cross countless streams several times as you snake through the passes. I was amazed to see the numbers of Vlei Krupers and Bass in these high regions. Both invader species they are doing serious damage to the indiginous species?

As for the road...it gets ruff in places, but a high clearance 2x4 bakkie will easily make it. They have laid down concrete strip paths on all the steep down hill sections. Made the requirement for 4x4 only to brake the decent and save my brake linings.

No tyre damage and 99% of the track is well maintained...this after heavy rain!

There are plenty of 4x4 routes you can arrange to go on along the way. Recon every establishment or farmer has a route.

Enjoy the trip, it was our first and def not the last...cant believe it took me 5 years in PE before I made the effort.

It is much appreciated, this is going to be a all round fishing trip, would like to do some carp, bass and barbel fishing. Vlei Krupers is good fun on earth worms and a float, use to catch them as a snotkop. So Ja, all the gear is going with and hope for the best.

Extremely bad news
The trip is postponed to the second weekend in May (11th - 13th) due to unforeseen circumstances.
I do apologize to whom it may concern.
All tips and suggestions is appreciated, and will be put in to action on proposed date.

Too bad P.J, May starts getting cold in those parts and the fronts come through more often which will make the fishing tougher !
