Good day to all

What do you think is the best bait to use for Rock Cod? And how deep must you cast for those oukies. I cuaght one or two small ones on different ocations in Port St-Johns, but frankly I think that was pure luck.

I want to get myself a couple of monsters in August when I go down to my Place in Port Edward.

They eat fish bait, octopus etc fish in rocky spots for them with at least a 8/0 hook
and a strong leader the light house area are a good spot for them at Port Edward

A sardine head cut just behind the gill plates, hooked in the lips, always worked for me. Otherwise a strip of chokka with a chartreuse bait skirt. Use a 8/0 Diachi

Thanks for the info mate. I'm not very sure what "chartreuse bait skirt" is.

Can you perhaps explain how to build that thingy because I want to target them Rock Cods.

go to your nearest tackle shop and and ask for the yamashita chartreus skirts. and MERWIE remember to have very strong main line and leader line because once these fish bite you got to "toe" them out of their hole.

Hi Guys,

in the Atlantic, we catch most of our cod on jig or twister from the boat. Using braid and 25gr jigs, Japan red if they are feeding on crap of white if they are feeding on sandeel.

from the beaches we did best on worm.

We often joke that the guy with the ugliest bait catches the rockod.

And sometimes it definitely seems to be true: it's the dude with the nastiest ball of smelly, bloody, vrot sardine with half the head attached that picks up that nice yellow belly or catface ...

More seriously, though, the head of any baitfish works well for rockcod, whether it's fresh sardine, mozzie, mackerel, scad, it doesn't really matter, just make sure that the point of your hook is well exposed (remember that their mouths are HUGE) and that you use a very solid trace.

rockcods are everywhere! if you find a rocky area then there will be rockods there but always remember that if you catch more than 10 rockods in an area then stop fishing in that specific area for rockcod. otherwise you will kill the species
in that area with no chance of them reproducing.

I second that LL,

I been reading a bit today, and they are extremely vulnerable, not so much in numbers, but in terms of how slow they grow and repopulate etc.

Hey guys, found that a simple yet effective rig 4 rockod b a short trace line wid 80mm flouro n a circle h00k, together with a weaker sinker line to a size 8 3way. Bait- cray, whole sardine incyd out and octopus. Using a circle h00k jst helpz in less gut or gill h00k upz and easier releases. A secret of mine is by using a well malletd piece of c0ngarella n sard together! Missi0n rocks rockod dnt go past that!

Locati0ns? Deep holes, ledges and drop offs, esp wer water is being draind off a ledge. Areas such as this, ghost crabs should b tried! Xcellent bait!
ps: meant a size 2, 3way swivel.
