Hi Vlok,
I used to dive it lots many years ago. The "lagoon" area is very protected, and you can often sneak in a dive there on or after a low tide even if there is big swell. It is mostly a gallie spot, have shot them up to just under 3 kilos there, but they are very tricky in the shallow water. As you walk down there you will see the lagoon as it has some rocks protecting it at the back. The 4 corners of the lagoon are the better areas for fish, and a patch in the middle. There is a gap through the rocks at the back towards the left that has a nice area of sandy clearings in front of it that the gallies love, but they are pretty spooky there! Occasionally you get some bigger hotties there, but mostly in the front right area. I always thought I would find steenbras there, but never did.
You can dive past the lagoon as well, but the kelp is very thick. Once in a blue moon you will find other species there, I have seen blacktail, wildeperd and baby cracker (2 kilos) there at times, and also shot a brute butterfish there, just a hair under 2 kilos, but I put plenty of time in there to find that one, only ever saw one other decent one.
It is a great spot to practice being sneaky in shallow water to up your chance of shooting a cracker when you get upcoast.
Enjoy it and look after it, it is a lovely dive spot that is worth remembering if you are hard up and the swell is up. You can dive there sometimes even in a 4m plus swell, you must just then dive on the low tide. A big NW makes it dirty, and too much SE over springs and it cools down quickly.
Let us know how it goes.
Cheers,
Tony
