Good Day All.

The past year I’ve been through the Trials and Tribulations of fishing.
But now it’s time to set my bar’ a little bit higher, Attending my first Club Competitions at the 7th July 2012 and I need all the advice from my fellow Sealine Family?
• Dips?
• Feed?
• Floats or Mielies?
• Flavors?
• Other Tips?
Please help a young and ambitious Angler out?

Combo's I would use:

-    Devilsfork with ebony/fx/dynamite/perdeby

-    Lootie with perdeby/vicks/dynamite

Only floaties and sweet white dough. Might be good to make a flavored dough, either duiwelsdrek or Devilsfork.

80m and 100m, innitially. Slaughter is deeper water, but maybe later push a bit further. Fish smaller baits and use less dip.

Good luck. Winter fishing can be tough, but persevere.

Hi there
Well Slaughters is a good venue with some decent fish
Distance id say 1 rod 60-70 mtr and the other 100mtr+ (120-140) if you cant get this distance then go as far as you can.
Baits my first cast is always plain ie plain dough,plain yellow float,plain kariba worn etc...
If i dont get fish after an hour or so then i start working the dips my combo's would be as follows:
FX/Cina 1 or Bunspice
FX/flomond(almond floro)
Joker(trucella)or Looti/Pink sweets(Imagination trucella)
K 53(strawberry garlic)or red activator/FX
Ebony (Musk)/Devils fork (duiwelsdrek)

The other advice i can give is as follows : Use what you believe in ie what works for me might not work for you and lastly never ever let other competitors rattle you ie if they are catching and you are not don't let it get to you i know it might be difficult ive seen guys that rattle and they start chopping and changing and in my oppinion thats a big mistake.
This is just my oppinion (done competitive bank angling for 15 years) hope it helps.Lastly go out there with a winning attitude and enjoy the day to the max.

Hi Anthony

Doesn't that look like a lot of the info i gave you on the email? Especially the PLAIN, Sweet white dough, Plain Floats and PLAIN Feed and the basic range of dips?

Hope to see you there but believe me if the Sards are close to shore on the south coast I'm going to be missing in action at that Club comp (Our Club, SWERWERS) fish along with Requin to boost both our numbers and believe me even though a club comp will have 15-20 anglers on a day there will be 4-6 Protea anglers and a few SAFBAF anglers to measure yourself against

Remember to chat to the guys, we don't bite and are always willing to help and share our knowledge as at the end of the year we all fish together in league teams against opposition clubs.

Sounds like you gave Anthony similar info if so then Anthony will do fine the only thing that i forgot to mention is be VERY patient in winter the fish go on a go slow LOL

Yip but it is pretty much echo'ed by both you 2.

one can see both of you have been through the mill and recognise that having your bait amongst the fish is key and that flavour etc is 3rd or 4th on the list of priorities.

Accurracy and distance consistancy whether 40 or 140m is key

Good hooks and hook lines

Plain dough and plain floaties and a set of 8-10 dips that are always fresh and that you know will catch you fish

In competitve angling the Mielies questioned will be used 1 out of 12-15 competitions, if ever used. So rather make fresh for a water that requires them and toss the left over once done.

Thank you so much for all the advise, will use it, can't wait for this day, and to meet yourself and other expertise in the game, please take into consideration i'm new' ....and when I say new I mean... (Nog nat agter die ore)

hi

i fished kolledge Plaas this weekend and dips that seemed to work were brandbek(its a chilli dip from super cast together with a little almond )

or the chacalaka also from supercast .

plain dough or , floaties and also make the bom as small as possible . had queit a good bite tempo on these but the cold was unbearable and we cut our trip short.

Here is advice that Enigma gave me: "Firstly you must remember that when fishing in a comp the fish are way more pressured in that there are now 10 anglers competing for fish in the same waterfront you would be fishing on your own so the fish are 10 x as pressured so in theory you should only catch 1/10th the amount you would catch when out on your own.

Rule of thumb for the Vaal is to fish 60m and 110m in the first hour and observe the anglers and determine where they are catching.

New anglers quickly doubt their plan and chop and change to early in the game. Fishing the Vaal I expect to get 1 or maybe 2 bites in the first hour of fishing.

Be careful to see different anglers catching fish and then changing to quickly and pull your bait out of the fishes path. Good rule of thumb is that the cast you are happy with leave it for 1hr 10 min and the other minimum of 30 minutes.

If in a zone there are 14 anglers and 5 catch a fish each and one catches 2 fish or 3 fish. to reel in and change would be wrong if you're fishing the same distance. Wait for your bite, hauling in 5-10 fish on a normal angling day is nothing in the last 3 hours of fishing.

Be sure to identify who is catching what, what distance are they catching if he gets 5 x tiny carp of which 1 weighs and you have no bites, no worry land a 1kg carp after 1hr 30 min and you're ahead.

Fish as light as you can for the distance you are fishing. I fish M1, M1.5, P4 and 3oz and nothing else. M0 doesn't hook a fish well.

Make sure your hooks are new and sharp. Cut off hook links and throw away after a days fishing

Your dip combinations are very strange for someone fishing a lot in the Vaal 100% in the Vaal.

I can guarantee that if you fish the following combinations you will always do well:

Devils Fork with FX (over the Devils Fork)
Small spray of Vicks covered with Lootie
Perdeby and GP or Red GP
Bunspice 32 in the afternoons.

Hookbaits

Plain White Dough
Plain Yellow Float
Vampire Floaties
Kariba Worms

Winter fishing is just slower than summer (not always)The start with 1 rod for 1 hour and the other 1hr 30 minutes

Determine the fish bite pattern. Carp school and patrol an area this explains why you are getting bites every 1 - 1hr 10min because that when they pass you so you bait has to be at the distance that school comes through and not somewhere else.

Once you know what distance from the side they are coming past keep your bait in the area they will come past every hour or so in the morning till you are eventually holding them there or as the school breaks up and the smaller schools come past every 20 minutes.

Panicking and looking for the fish where no-one else is catching will lead to you missing the fish when they do come past.

When you miss your spot or distance, reload and re-cast or you are wasting and hour of fishing time."

I also started fishing competitively this year, its totally different to social.........

I will use your advice accordingly. Distance seems like the biggest factor in competitive angling?

Anthony, I think the dips Enigma is referring to is the standard Vaaldam dips:

1. FX
2. Perdeby
3. Devilsfork
4. Looti
5. Vicks
6. Rooi GP
7. Bunspice
8. TCP Base ( I prefer plain TCP)
9. Duiwelsdrek
10. Gumtree

This is only a guess, but looking at reports of all the other sites and this one I would say that is the favourite Vaaldam dips.......
