Good afternoon to all.

I was wondering if any of the Sealine members have seen the Fox 2009 catalogue?

Fox state next to each item what the recommended retail price is Eg: Fox 4 rod sky pod INCLUDING carry case for 290 pounds.

Therefore, 290xR14=R4060.00. Then tariff on imported good at app 15% of each items value, thus, 0.15x4060=R609.00

Total=R4669.00

In SA we are looking at paying R5200.00 for the same pod WITHOUT a carry case?

Carry case is an additional R600.00

I understand that businesses need to make profits but how much and at whose expense?!

I dont think that it is good for competition where the sole importer of Fox into SA is the same company that makes the 'cheaper' alternative product available.

I personally feel that there is a monopoly in the SA fishing tackle market.

The whole situation is annoying.

Any dealers in and around JHB that can be recommended for fair pricing and competetive service would be appreciated.

The price for the fox sky pod is frightening. I personally would not spend that amount of money on any pod regardless the quality. Too me, it is not worth the money...Sorry Fox lovers but this is just my personal opinion.

I think most of the tackle shops are taking us for a ride!!!

monopoly it is and thats no dispute,, i wouldnt pay 5k either cause frankly i just dont have 5k to spend on a pod, keep in mind sensation and docks my both come in fom the same company but i find anthing with a docks sticker on it much much much better quality than sensation,, i just bought a gillfox unhooking mat with safty flap and wow what a lekker mat, so it show if you support the local guys and help them grow maybe soon we will also have quality locally made pods and a fraction of the price so next time you go to the tackle store for some specimen tackle dont ignore the local brands and assume they are crap,, there are some odd items worth buying, and like i said once we boost our local guys stuff and get them to grow it can only benefit our local anglers,, in more than one way, we will have spares readily availble,, better customer service in regards to returns and hell if they export at some stage they my even help the rand a bit lol,,

Well said Deisel! My only problem is that I don't know all the brands and whether they are local or imported. And from my experience, not all the shops give/know the best advice. So it can be a bit scary for a newbie to sift through all the brands, (mis)-information etc. I think that's why a lot of guys start out buying the wrong stuff only to buy new/right a few months later. Or some just give up completely...

oh ja i agree fully i have bought twice already and wasted a putt load of dosh,, im also a newbie and the only local brand i know i know is gillfox so i support Mr fox craft on his venture in the hope that one day we will have cheaper tackle, alot of his stuff isnt bad at all, a far throw from fox but getting there,,

some of the Gilfox stuff is almost identical to the more expensive brands on the market...not a bad product at all...and as you say...supporting a local brand might get the costs down a bit...

The only fox equipment I baught was the Alarms and Swingers...cos I liked them very, very, very much. My pod is by Sensation, cos it was cheap, and the rest is pretty much Gilfox...Got their weight sling, couldn't really ask for more!

I sure do love my fox alarms thought...

Guys i noticed the discussion on fresh water tackle and i often come across many specials for this type of fishing, i am off to the retailers trade show in august and would like to see if i can make things easier and cheaper for you guys as well.

 

Please could you guys tell me what is in demand and names to look for, i can get gilbert foxcraft's stuff as well.

I've just had a chat with Sensation on this matter because I just worked it out that if I buy a Skypod 4 at todays exchange from www.specialist-tackle.co.uk less 5% less 17.5% UK VAT then add 14% SA VAT and 50% transport I can still land it at almost R1000 cheaper than their 2009 Recommended Retail of R5999.

Yes folks it's now R5999. Grant Fox's answer to them is that they lost such huge sales in Europe that (traditional market) UK, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland that they asre focussing their effort on Central Europe and Russia for standard sales and in an attempt to regain market presence in the traditional markets they are providing special discounts.

Fact of the matter is that they are giving the UK shops such discounts that to buy Fox is cheaper to do online from the UK and have it delivered to you than to buy from a local retailer (and a lot cheaper at that)

The Sensation guys will take this matter up with Fox Intl. How it's going to be rectified I don't know because they've already bought Millions of Rands worth of tackle that's either here or on the way.

As for GilFox and Docks. Both are "Local Brands" as said. It just means there is one less middle man in the system.

Fox Intl, Korda etc are international brands just as Shimano and Daiwa are international brands. They have huge personnel incl Research and Development, marketing etc, etc. They warehouse the manufactured products and then sell to wholesalers worldwide who then sell to retailers who then sell to anglers.

Brands like Sensation, Docks and Gillfox are bought by local wholesalers, directly from the manufacturer and then sold to the retailers etc, etc. For this reason the big difference in price but to do this you have to be able to put down R10-15m to be competitive in prices and those who don't have that Moola end up distributing brands of international dealers who have huge budgets.

So yes many of Docks and Gillfox products are bought directly from the manufacturer and are only available in South Africa and thus the better pricing on many of the products.

There are many items available in the stalls of the big name guys that are not available to anyone else and obviously with the input of all the international carpers the quality of the name brand products are without reproach.

Let's hope that Fox intl makes an effort to accommodate the SA market or I see that many SA Anglers will be buying online from the UK.

Just a tip. It's always a lot cheaper to get a few guys to club in and buy at once when buying online as the bigger the order the better the spread of freight costs.
