Hey all, just want to find out if anyone else is having this problem and if they have managed to get it sorted out? on my GME300 29mhz, I have got terrible comms. My incoming comms are perfect but when I transmit it sounds like I am at the bottom of a toilet bowl and we get that squealing like we have a wet mike and the other parties can hardly hear me? I tend to use my VHF mostly but there are a lot of guys who dont use VHF.

I have contaced Avnic about this and there response is as follows

"we are aware that there is a couple of issues, but have found that if you hold the mike 30cms away from from your mouth and angle the mike piece 90 degrees away from your mouth it will reduce the amount of noise"

What the f*&%??? now I have tried this and its still crappy! I am a supplier to the marine industry and if my electronics are faulty I will remove that batch from the dealer network, as I understand that electronics do go faulty, yet they still seem to be selling loads of them?  Do I have the Dud here or has anyone else got similar issues?

in my simple mind if you are aware of issues first fix them before selling them

BTW I have installed a few of them for friends and clients, they complain I WILL INSTRUCT THEM TO DEMAND A REFUND based on this.

That sound like what we call under water noise.

If that is so it can be due to compression or chipering this is done via a chipset before broad cast and decoding after recieve .Might just be that it is component failure and/or bad quality chipsets used .

Might also be water damage :lol:1

I have the same proble on my GME300! Yip, last one lasted 1 year I chucked it thought it must have gotten wet and got a new one the same so I don't need to bother with changing the licence. And this one is also giving me crap! So int's not one or two, both myne are stuffed!

If this is a quality issue the manufacturer/whole saler should help.

Is the unit Icasa approved there should be a sticker on the unit and the Box to confirm they are tested can you check and let me know

Hmmm ... my fishing partner very recently bought a new GME 300 from TEXWISE, I followed suit and bought one from NuWave Marine a few days later for a better price - he has installed his and it is giving the exact same problems as described here - he went so far as to replace the antenae - problem persists!!

Had I not seen this post I would have believed he had antenae / transmission issues!!

I have not installed mine and so will be taking it straight back to NuWave and "upgrade" to something else ... in the meantime, my "madala navstar" will just have continue to do the job!!

Hi Guys
I spoke to ICASA and they just test for power output in Spec ,Noise created in spec and interference inn band .

So the sugestion that was provided point to the reciever overdriving on/from the Mic to the unit this point to component and build quality.

I do not know what you paid for the units but it is the same as comparing a samsung D500 to a Nokia N95.

See U also had problems with the GME300 radio. My units volume knob gets corroded and stuck everytime I come back from the coast. I normally remove the knob and spray some Q20, forse it a bit and it loosens up. This time it was stuck too much, and the knob broke.

Now I must buy a new one or try and fix it. But after reading your comments, seems like this will become a regular event. Dont want to support companies that sells stuff with "Marine" branding that cant handle the marine environment for 3 or 4 weeks a year, the rest of the time high and dry in Gauteng. I have the same problem with a "Marine" Sony cd player. Only lasted 8 months, 2 week fishing trips. Must also look at something else. Maybe Boss Audio.

Is it worth buying a new GME radio, or did you find something better to spend my money on.

Unfortunatly Fish, I have not found another 29mhz, but touch wood the replacement GME unit has not given me any more hassles.
With regards to your audio sysytem, it is unfortunate that the sony has let you down as generally they are regarded as good units. I see you are riding a duck, you may want to look at the where it is mounted, although it may have a cover on the front there may be water seaping into the consol which results in condensation building up behind the radio which causes the corrosion?

We have found this a few times, also we do get a lot of sales guys in the marine game which sell products incorrectly as "Waterproof" the reality is that most are just water resistant meaning they have additional protection on the boards which help in resisting moisture, but a good blast with a cleaning hose or a good soaking will damage the unit.

there are waterproof units available unfortunatly at a premium!! but there are some other solutions available to you. I am the distributor of the Boss Marine products as well as the Jensen Marine range so I can assist you if you like.

We do also get units that fail but a good part of those failures could have been prevented with correct installation.

Youre right. The installation is a problem. This Sony is my second radio as well. After the first radio (also sony but not the marine one) I really tried to close all the holes in my console, but it seems like there is always a new one. I have that halfround cover in front, but even one of the little screws at the back of the face is rusted, i'm not sure how water came in there. And the volume knob started to work only at times on my last trip. Now the source knob doesn't work. A bigger problem is to get the back of the unit away from water, I cant find something on the market to protect the back.

I'm not sure if I send it back if they wil repair it on the guarantee, what do you think, is it worth trying?

The GME was not mounted in those half round covers when I bought the boat, and it looked more "waterproof" to me, aparently not. I must surely then also put the new one I must buy in one of those covers.

Doesn't any of you have some spares or know where I can get some for the GME units, myne is working, I only need the volume and the other small pots and maybe the front cover.

I have had to replace my GME once every year. The issue whereby your transmissions sound like calling from the "bottom of the ocean" have still not gone away. I have gone so far as to mount my GME in the hatch of the front console so it is far from any water elements. It is far from waterproof - more like splash proof - thus the reason for mounting the radio inside the forward console.

At last year's Boat Show I bought a Navstar 220 as a backup from Killer Deals - cost R1,000.

I have noticed when fishing off the Natal coast, cell phones have proved more effective than 29Mhz. Maybe someone should approach Nokia or the like....

Fish, you can try sending it in mate they may sort you out, but the answer will probably be that it is water damaged, and unfortunatly that is the case. I will gladly come and see your setup when I am next in your area, maybe we can solve where the water is coming in.

Hi All,

The GME300 is known to have a problem with its crystal.  It is not a 29mhz, the importers apparently do a conversion on it.   Ours has also given hassles and we are now on our 2nd one which is doing the same thing.  I have heard of many other chaps that have had the same issues with the coms.

Avnic (garmin agents) have apparently taken over the GME agency.  If the radio is under a year old they will replace it.  Give it a bash.

Our first GME300 failed to work on a trip to Richards bay so we couldn't launch we open the unit as it was past its warranty and found a mysterious fungal growth had taken over the insides of the unit its transmitting was also up to manure. We mounted the second unit inside the center console of the boat and moved the aerial to the top of the T Top which vastly improved both the reception and transmission.
