Getting the Spot!

Hi - I have started lure fishing in the maitlands and Blue Horizon bay area for the last 4 months without any luck. Do someone have any recommendation regarding what tides to fish and what type of lure works best for that area.

I use the following:

8ft crossfire
3000 Diawa Sweepfire reel
20lb braid
3/4 ounce bucktail, double plate spoon, 3/4 paddle tail and minnow.(all tipe of colours)

Please help !!

..There is no KWIK success way to spinning and gooing spoons and lures....My suggestion...depends how near OR far you live from the waters edge....you need to pick two or three ..no more that three...spots , that make you feel comfortable and then , you need to work them...get to know them like the back of your hand and then get to know what tides..winds ..water temp works best for each spot....barometer readings...etc etc...getting info from other fisherman is great ....BUT....they might see a spot different to you...OR work it different to you....so while its fine to gather info...I suggest you make notes and besides its fun finding out how a spot works when you work it out for yourself.....tight lines and good luck...

Nothing wrong with those lures. For BHB and Maitlands your target species will be Cob and Leerie. The swell on that stretch of coast is often very big, which can prevent the fish from coming in to feed within casting range.

My catches there have always been when there is smaller swell and little to no side rip. Even then, I've had to put in many hours for little success.

I personally prefer fishing from low tide on the incoming push, but have caught on the drop as well.

Keep at it - you will come right eventually.

Thanks Vades and Kenty. I will try low tide pushing, keeping record and smaller swells next time. I see this weekend is going to be 10 ft so I will need to try a different location. Any suggestions Vades?

Sundays, Kabeljouws or Gamtoos surf if they're any smaller... or try the rivers.
