Who is able to shed some light here "............ Is it an elusive fish?
I believe not too great eating but a pleasure to catch

I am no expert, but for me the garrick one of the easiest fish to catch on artificials.
And to be quite honest an 4kg Garrick is not bad tasting. Just remove the skin.

being an absolute novice and having never touched a lure before in my life i managed to catch 28 odd small garrick over a period of 4 months in my first year ever trying for them..

if they are in the area and the conditions are right (i have found them to be early morning and late afternoon feeders mostly) they will go for a strike pro lure without hesitation...

fishing for these little guys (i have currently only caught babies 30cm or so) can be quite fun, and when you see the entire shoal after your lure you will be super excited...

they are found but not limited to the upper reachers of rivers but will prefer warmer water and be most active here.

perserverance and putting the time in will yield you good results..

I am now on the hunt for some bigger boys, and im told this is the time of year for them...

just need to get the rivers to clean up a little after the rains...

good luck

Hello JS109,

I am no pro on a boat but have been out targeting them from a kayak and from a ski boat... They are really easy to catch and you can use either lures or livebait with livies being the best for me. But make no mistake they are very easy to catch on a lure!!!!

With the livies I make a chin weight or I put a ball sinker(1oz) sliding and a swivel and make a 800mm-1m fluaro leader and put a 3angel hoek in its mouth... Then you work just behind the waves as near the side as you can and you troll the livie very very very slow... You can use keratien, sand steenbras, mullet, mackerel, pinkies and do not be scared to use biiiggg livies, especially mullet. They very often knock it and miss the hook, then put the motors in neutral and he will return to collect its food... Then you hold on as the biigg ones pull damn hard!!!

Post some pics and please keep to responsible fishing!!!

Thanks chaps......
Always good to hear how others catch these fish.
I'm told you drop the bait in the midbreak, get out quickly before the rollers come in and sit beyond the back line waiting for the pull.

The thing is how do you distinguish a pull from the action of the breakers, is he a slow and fussy eater?

It is great if you can drop your bait in the mid section but also dangerous. But if you know the sea then drop it there. I personally prefer to troll just a little faster than trolling speed and keep just on the backline. But with the yak I play in and out of the waves...

Regarding a take from a garric, Believe me you can not mistake it for a wave! They take of with a m()er of a speed and gives you a decent fight!!! The nicest fighting fish thats very easy to catch...
