Gaining hours at sea

Guys, I am also a newcomer to your great forum and am glad that I could discover a forum like this. I am no newcomer to the boating scene and have quite a lot of experience on the water.  My experience is unfortunetly limited to inland waters only and I guess I can therefore not really be regarded as a skipper of distinction. I recently bought an Arrowhead Skie with a 40 Yamaha and have the following two questions I hope you will be able to help me with: 1.  Is the above rigg adequate for Category E purposes on a windless day in Mosselbay?  I bought it with a Category E Seaworthy Certificate, but am not sure whether it is safe to go out to sea with such a small little boat. 2.  If you say that it is safe to go out my next question is how do I get the required number of hours at sea to enable me to convert my Category R Skippers Licence to a Categoty E?  I have been out to sea on charter trips a lot but have been told that those hours at sea do not count. Your assistance will be greatly appreaicted.

My First boat was the Arrowhead had great fun and is n nice little boat, as far as a CAT C goes not to sure you would qualify with one motors. Also don't Think hours spent as a charter unless you where handling the boat would qualify as hours at sea, any case enjoy the boat.

The boat will not qualify for Cat C due to having 1x motor , Cat E or Cat D yes. You would need to do you Cat C skippers ticket from scratch as far as I know as I dont think you can Convert from R to C just by logging the required hours. The theory exam is a lot more literature as compared to cat R. The required 24 hrs sea time are done when completing your practical and entered into a logbook where you have to sign at the police station when completed.I have just completed my practical at Shelley beach last weekend.

If you are interested in doing your Cat C course drop me a pm and I will give you the details of the examining officer in the East Rand.

Hope the info helps.

howzit Posie 2,
I have an Arrowhead much like what you describe and a twin engined skiboat. I fish a lot on inland waters, particullarly Jozini dam for Tigerfish and use my 2 motor boat on there all of the time because of the rapid change in the weather and calm to storm in minutes, SABC only report it ^^..^^..^^..^^..
The problem we all face as skippers is ok it's calm now, but what's the
prognosis, I wouldn't launch my Arrowhead into the sea, it's not the right boat for surf in my opinion.:welcomesea::welcomesea::welcomesea:
