Hi I can get one of these second hand for 6K - who has one, is it any good, is it worthwhile looking at? It looks like a good unit - GPS and fishfinder combo. Any help appreciated, thanks!

Hey Will101, there is nothing wrong with this unit its one of the best, I had one on my previous boat and it was flawless. I sold it on and bouaght the 1850 which just had a slightly bigger screen, I have since moved on to the 7000f and the 1650 is still going strong on the old rig and the owner is very happy, I would say 6k is about right if it is coming with the mapping.

Thanks very much for a much needed quick response!! I offered the guy R5k and we'll see if he accepts - it does not come with the cmap card :(

Without mapping that is pricey in my opinion! For a second hand unit add mapping at R2500 (as per SnR.) and you could rather get a new Eagle Fishelite 640 unit. It's not a Furuno, but it will have the same screen, better resolution, a guarantee, mapping and a more powerful sounder (1500w instead of 600w).
List price on that unit is R8k before discount.

As far as I'm concerned they are basically Lowranse units just not as high specked... Lower resolution than equivilant unit etc.

My 2c.

Edit: was reading the wrong pricing! FishElite 640c 5" C 640x480 1,500w    R 10,100.00

Bennie, the 1500W is peak to peak. The RMS value is 187W. Furuno is 600W RMS. :fbash

Thanks guys! I think (as per Dr Fish's recommendations) that I am going to stick to my original plan and get the dedicated Furuno sounder (FCV620) and an el cheapo (nuvi500 or similar) GPS, with my handheld as backup. If you think about it: 4 trips to the deep's fuel = R10 000, so spending the same amount on a decent fishfinder is a no-brainer. The 620 plus transducer (with speed and temp) = about R11 500.

I'll rather get a 2nd hand GPS - those are a dime a dozen.

Bennie you're excused, just be careful when putting together my package so you don't get gaffed by one of those hooks!
