Full Moon or Dark Moon

Hi Everybody

I have read that Hunters prefer hunting when the moon is a dark moon, because the animals feed during the day as they cannot see at night, I saw this in the Kgalagadi during a recent visit, we where there over a full moon period, and most game where lying down during the day..

So, if game do feed during dark moon, or very little, can the same be said for shore fishing...that the fish do not move around as much during the day when it was or is full moon, and is more active during the day if it is dark moon?

Hi Johan,

I am not sure about others, like reef fish, but we have definately had more success during dark moon periods when speafishing pelagic's on the North Coast. We have gone as far as planning diving around dark moon periods.

kob beslis in die donkermaan. (at night)
Kan dit moontlik wees om elwe op sig jag en hulle prooi beter silhouette vorm teen die blink see oppervlak, terwyl kob grootliks op hul sylyn jag (en beter bekruip in die donker)?

I must agree that as long as your line in in the water and with the bait of choice you will catch the fish irrespective of the moon

Elf have an excellent sense of smell, they smell their bait at night! Mostly use throw baits and fresh bait for Elf eg; Pike is excellent, they go into a frenzy with the smell of this fish in the water.

Also not too sure about the animals feeding around moon phases. I'm a regular Kruger visitor, and all I've ever heard with regards to moon activity, is that the predators esp big cats do take advantage of overcast or new moon conditions, only because it gives them an advantage in that their night vision is superior to that of their prey's. Seen enough feeding activity by the herbivores during low light moon conditions, and enough daytime laziness during the same period. Obviously kob also have superior darkness skills to their prey as well.

During dark moon periods we definately attracted more pelagics to flashers when diving in day time. I presume it is because they are less succesful hunting at night during dark moon and therefore more active during the day. Whilst during full moon they also hunt fairly successfully at night and therefore are less active at day time due to not having to feed as much. Just what we observed..
