fresh water eels!!!!?

hi guys, I have recently heard about the nice fight that eels put up and that they are a great table fish, i live in the eastern freestate and was wondering where the best/closest river/dam would be to go eel fishing. thanx for the help

Found only in rivers that flow East as they live part of their lives in the Ocean.

Best fishing is below dam walls and closer to the coast.

Many of the EC dams still have healthy populations of Eels and the mottled eels grow to 20kg and put up one hell of a fight

Doubt if the Freestate has eels, will have to go over the escarpment to EC or KZN waters to target them

Thanx for the help! Ilm only about 3 hours drive from the EC, so I shouldnt have to look very hard to find a nice spot, maby close to midmar, PTMB? Thanx again!

There are nice eels in Chelmsford dam at Newcastle but difficult to catch.

Only one place for eels and that is the Tugela River. Anywhere from where the N3 crosses it towards the sea. Fish bait are the best but they are also partial to chicken livers etc. Look for some moving water at the top of a pool and try and get there in the golden hour before dark. Nothing prepares you for a puffing 5kg wriggling rod of fury

Legend has it that further down many years ago below the Tugela Ferry in a pool called Sandgat they got an 80lb monster!
