Freediving record holder Hanli Prinsloo mailed me about Surprise Apnea Freediving courses which are being held for Durban Surfers from the 16[suP]th[/suP] to the 21[suP]st[/suP] of December with Mark and Gail Addison from Blue Wilderness in Rocky Bay.

There are still spots available at R900 per person. I have been fortunate enough to do a 2-day freediving course with Hanli and can tell you it is a must for spearos, people who crayfish and those of you that are into snorkelling.

However this one day course is specially developed for surfers, using a training approach Hanli calls SURPRISE APNEA.

Freediving is the sport of diving as deep, as far or as long as possible on one single breath of air.

It is an age old activity with roots in ancient Polynesian, Japanese and Greek cultures, where freediving for pearls, shellfish and sponges was a way of surviving off the sea.

Today Freediving is an advanced competition sport with athletes pushing their physical boundaries into a realm where mental strength and deep-rooted aquatic mammalian responses keep them alive.

The research done on freedivers offers surfers a wealth of experience to be prepared for the kind of hold-downs experienced by big wave surfers.

Hanli lives in CT and is travelling to KZN to run these courses for more info please email her today hanli@iamwater.co.za or check her site www.iamwater.co.za
