Francois Pienaar took the title of SA Distance casting champion in the 2011 National Casting Championships held in Welkom

He took the 125gr and 150gr classes and set a few records.

He was using the Old design 400/7 and in difficult conditions managed a best cast of 237m with the 125gr.

He didn't even take out the 400/7b new generation rod, that he's keeping as an ace up his sleeve for the World Champs in Europe.

Just on a note, his Zipplex and Maver casting rods are also not HMG.

Makes me think a bit of just how much of a marketing Gimmick is HMG vs MMG vs Standard?

But I still have a soft place for a few of my HMG's especially my Pole Vaulting Shark Extreme HMG.

Just a question Craig. Do these guys break a couple of rods during these casting champs.???If so which are HMG and which are non HMG or standard..?

Hi Graig, what thickness of line (mono/braid) are they allowed to use? Also is this using a multiplier?  Excuse the dumb questions, but I'm just curious.

Hiya Enigma,

Just goes to show?

Just look what they have done to market tooth brushes and razor blades...who knows where they will go with fishing rods in years to come! LoL

Yes they do occasionally break rods but more often they tear muscles or pop tendons, The rods are brutes and I have yet to see HMG's on the range.

The previous SA Champion (3 years back) was Johan Beukes and he casts using his Century's not HMG and which he actually fishes with.

I haven't seen them break rods in competition in fact haven't heard of it but I'm sure it does happen from time to time.

The current World leaders are the Century rods from the UK with ZZiplex knocking on their doors.

These rods are made from Carbons manufactured in Europe and not Korea/China as are our rods.

The European ratings for carbon differ greatly from ours and many of both brands are made from 1k, 3k and 5k carbon (no idea what it would be compared to - but seeing that the carbon grade goes up to 12K I would say it's not HMG as we know it)

I had opportunity to cast the Century WR300 (The first rod to cast over 300yds) Not HMG but light and crisp as they use Autoclave instead of oven curing technology on the blanks. Their blanks range from 750-860gr for a 6-8oz rod but in many cases the blank is not made from a single material but a series of materials.

Have a look at both the Century and Zziplex sites and you will only see one reference to Higher Modulus, only proof of distances and fish landed.

That I can live with because at the end of the day you need a rod that fishes well and casts like a dream. HMG or not is irrelevant if the rod does what you want it to do.

The price of these rods is also out of our average anglers class, at GBP300 - 385 (R3300 - 4300 excl VAT and Shipping)

They only have 1 rod in 3 pieces but all others are 2 pieces. Some of the rods have a 3K but then 1K higher but and base of tip and then many have a Glass tip and none of them sell the Gimmicky multi tips.

Casting is done in different weight and line categories.

Minimum diameter of line is 0.35mm and leader is used.

They cast with both Multiplier (mainly Magged - Abu 6500 and Daiwa H7) and fixed spool reels and distances are much the same.

Francois casted over 300m using an 8oz with a leader and 5lbs mainline (0.17mm) but that's no record or unofficial record as it was not with standard tackle.

There are 2 casting disciplines that are hosted on the world stage the one is Accuracy and Spot Casting the discipline of which Hennie Papenfuss is the South African convenor and it concentrates on accuracy and casting skill measured with 7.5 and 18gr plastic plugs. more detail and rules on http://castingsport-icsf.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40&Itemid=40

The distance casting is Known as Long Distance Casting of Sea Weights. This is a sub discipline of Sea Angling under FIPS, all the rules can be found under http://www.fipsmer.org/rules/FIPS-M_Reglements_English_Edition_1_2010.pdf pages 75-80

In Short the following

6.00 Lines and Leaders

The main line must be made of monofilament at least:

25/00 mm for 100 gr. weights
28/00 mm for 125 gr. weights
31/00 mm for 150 gr. weights
35/00 mm for 175 gr. weights

The line has to be circular and of a constant diameter.

The leader must be made of monofilament. The line must be made of nylon with preference fluorescent:

27 kg (60 lbs) or a diameter of 70/00 mm for 100 gr. and 125gr. weights

36 kg (80 lbs) or a diameter of 80/00 mm for 150 gr. and 175gr. weights

The leader must be turned at least 8 times on the spool of the reel before casting and must be made of a continuous length.

The lines of the competitors will be checked with the official micrometer of the jury.

the first rod to officially cast over 300yards was the conoflex tournament extreme and this was done by neil kelland years before the century wr300 were ever made and as far as I remember it was done with a 175gramm weight . the man neil kelland was an extremley muscular man who was very fast
